Rachie14: Like I said, choice and intent. The UK makes the choice not to use a weapon that has only one purpose. To kill.

We have others who choose to make other objects as weapons. This is not just the UK though.

What freedom do you think you have that we do not? I am listening. Politics is vastly controlled over there by money. It is here too, but the NRA has no influence on us. They certainly do on politics over there. Knife manufacturers have no control here. We have laws on those as well. We often do public drives to ask people to turn in certain types.

What exactly are you doing to make your country a safer, better place? Lets be real here. You don't want to do anything to change the impacts of innocent people being killed. Are you all at war with each other? We live in a socialist society. That means we think beyond just ourselves. That isn't what you do. You do survival of the fittest and everyone else well, not your problem.

I get it, some of you think we're weak because we don't have guns. Most of us here are civilised. I don't feel that my rights are infringed. Am I entitled to defend my family and home? Yes, but with reasonable force. Because we're about being reasonable. Having a gun is premediated anyway. From where I stand you are afraid of your own. Let alone other countries.

Upon closing. Guns are not toys. Do I have a problem with people who have mentality that they are. Yes. Same as I do with people who think they belong in society.

We're not a police state. We do not have enough police in our country. We have laws, just like you do. But we still do not feel the need to have guns. Psst several people have commented from the UK. More than those from the U.S.
at least you admit your country can't and won't protect the citizens in their entirety. The People of the U.K. didn't get to vote or fight for their fire arm rights.

Your crime rates are higher than you think. much higher than the U.S. in other areas because the people have to jump through hoops that they can't even use in their favor.

You really should look at the victim nation your ideology has helped to create by laying down and rolling over.

The last stats I found available for the U.K. were in 2015. I've known about them for a long time while searching for other information. 2016 or more updated might be available now.

My country is safer. It's hard to be invaded when the population is capable of helping to defend. Gun deaths by comparison pale to every thing else but people need to push an ideology not information. Breaking things down into individual stats, we still have less 4 deaths per 100,000 people, fire arm related. Not sure how much of that is suicide, police confrontations, etc. There are property crimes, etc.

What stats can you give for the U.K.? How about individual violations that come in various forms? The actual U.S. numbers show declines over the last 20-25 years.

When the U.K. in 2017 reports fire arm offenses up 27%; what does that mean? Some people didn't keep their permit up to date? I'm not seeing where you have the same rights or freedom we do in the U.S. at all. At least my daughters can legally protect themselves in public or at home.

I didn't say anything about us not protecting ourselves. Where did you jump to that conclusion? Do you have the Army? The Navy and an air force? I only feel the need to protect my country. Should that even arise.

Yeah so much safer you feel the need to carry a gun. I don't even think about is someone going to attack me, shoot me etc when I go to leave my home. Why? Because I do not fear it. But seems you do as you need to carry a weapon. Unless my lip gloss can be considered a weapon. angel

Of course my crime rates are higher than I think. Seems I am ignorant in your world to my reality. doh

Perhaps you should focus on your own countries death rate at the hands of it's own citizens who choose to be armed. We do not make that choice. We make the choice not to have guns. Damn that freedom of choice and speech wink

Your perceived idea of threat is noted...perhaps that is why Canadians do not have as much violence as the USA...we are not holed out in gated communities with weapon in hand...I did see bowling for columbine...Moore raised some good points in his documentary...

Although city dwellers do not need such fire power like a hunting rifle..I did grow up in a rural area and many people there enjoyed hunting...my brothers being hunters but also appreciated/respected wildlife...their rifles were not meant for killing humans or defending property or themselves...so the notion of protection from harm befuddled me...

Gun control is needed...whether you are mentally ill or have rage problems or illegally selling guns to minors and in turn breaking the law...we do need limits...as far as protection...more innocents are harmed...

The Gun Control Act of 1968 was enhanced in 1993 with the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. The Brady Act created a background check system which required licensed sellers to inspect the criminal history background of prospective gun purchasers, and the Brady Act created a list of categories of individuals to whom the sale of firearms is prohibited. As quoted from 18 U.S.C. 922 (d):

It shall be unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person— (1) is under indictment for, or has been convicted in any court of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year; (2) is a fugitive from justice; (3) is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802)); (4) has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution; (5) who, being an alien— (A) is illegally or unlawfully in the United States; or (B) except as provided in subsection (y)(2), has been admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa (as that term is defined in section 101(a)(26) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101 (a)(26))); (6) who has been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions; (7) who, having been a citizen of the United States, has renounced his citizenship; (8) is subject to a court order that restrains such person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner of such person or child of such intimate partner or person, or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner in reasonable fear of bodily injury to the partner or child, except that this paragraph shall only apply to a court order that— (A) was issued after a hearing of which such person received actual notice, and at which such person had the opportunity to participate; and (B) (i) includes a finding that such person represents a credible threat to the physical safety of such intimate partner or child; or (ii) by its terms explicitly prohibits the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against such intimate partner or child that would reasonably be expected to cause bodily injury; or (9) has been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

Again you ASSume. I don't carry but I do have the background and training to do so.

I don't walk around with my head up my butt. Just because I don't live in an area where I feel I need too doesn't mean others don't.

Look at the U.K. stats. You talk but have no idea what you're defending or allowing to be victimized. No, you don't care about your country or fellow citizens. ONLY what YOU want to think and believe.

I walk around with self respect. Do learn what that is and how to talk to people from other countries. I know the stats here. It's a shame you won't address yours. Like most American's you think in arrogance you can flex your mouth and people will do what you want.

Like the OP trolling other countries. Yet, when asked a direct question you simply avoid and continue to bash other countries. Then you wonder why people like me. Have very little respect for people like you.

There are very few of you in your own arrogance will listen.

This makes sense to me. Are the UKs police the UK’s citizens body guards and there when you need them? Time for change for the better in the UK.
Four shootings in 48 hours in gun free London , to be expected considering its run by a Islamic monkey .

I didn't bash your country.

I am however, going to bash your lack of information about your own country.

I know what the rough status of my country is. At least our laws allow for law abiding people to have freedom of choice and the ability to defend. Yours seems to have warped you into thinking victim hood is great.

over 320 million people in mine vs. around 65 million or so in yours.

I knew exactly what was being addresses just with title. It's a lot more than knifing.

I don't need your respect. I've felt bad for that whole region for many years because of the rights they don't have as the government pushes more on the citizens. I don't live there so not much I can do.

You don't even respect your own country to be able sit back like every thing is okay.

If I had a gun I suppose I could hold up the local minimarket.

Except my daughter works there and the staff would tell me to piss off home (two doors away).

I'd probably have to kiss goodbye to my 10% off staff family card and staff saving the near waste veg for me.

Yeah, maybe I'll just stick to the community/humanity lifestyle where kids can leave their bikes outside the shop unlocked.

It sounds odd, but it's a trust and caring for other people thing.

Okay, I know, it's a foolish ethic for someone on a dating site. People will start thinking I'm capable of relationships.

I couldn't help myself. It was clear she was clueless about what many of the citizens might actually be subjected too in her region.

She even thinks things are bad in the U.S. but information says the opposite in almost all directions and things continue to improve. At least while we still have a leader in favor of the nation and citizens. If the leader starts to slip too much; we'll let him fall. Plain and simple.

Interestingly enough, I have a Brit at work that thinks and says his country is so great. He won't answer the questions of why he's here and won't move back. He doesn't bash Trump any more like he used too.

Even in the U.S., information seems to reflect that the younger people are starting to understand better as things improve.

They're still a little like jelly fish with the Brexit scenario so far. I'm starting to wonder if they really want things to improve. Part of the reason the vote came about is because the people there, wanted the government to start working more for them instead of every one else. Now, it would seem they might all be afraid. The other case scenario is that they allow a second vote.

Their governing body is considering not honoring the votes by the way things read. A second vote may be a way for them to continue doing things how ever they want. It's not like the people can take a real stand or even fight back for that matter.

Kaylana04: Actually, it does if you were going to stop at that.

But the application of the statistic to gun control in a country that allows versus a country that prohibits guns is not valid.

It’s like comparing the number of people who eat pork and then using it to compare America to an Islamic country.
Hi all,
Just a quick return to the application of ratios to this topic (or any therein...).

A ratio can be easily formed - a mathematical comparison of two unrelated items. (Ex. Miles and time= speed)

Often people are emotionally swayed by numbers due to the quick conclusion we draw.

However, application is much more tricky.

When the top variable affects the bottom, the ratio is declared useless because of regression.

In this case, deaths affects population number. As deaths increase, the population decreases.

“In each situation, we want to control for differences in the denominator when the thing we really care about is the numerator. But there is peril lurking in a ratio: only if the relationship between numerator and denominator is a straight line through the origin will the ratio be meaningful. If not, the ratio will misrepresent the true relationship between numerator and denominator. In contrast, regression techniques–these include analysis of covariance–are versatile: they can accommodate an analysis of the relationship between numerator and denominator when a ratio is useless.“

Source: “Explorations in statistics: the analysis of ratios and normalized data”

In Logic, we must not use emotion to override our cognitive ability.

And the use of simple statistics is not sensible either.

Allow me to correct some misplaced ideology.

The UK government is completing Brexit, the EU government is doing all it can to hinder/destroy that exit plan. So no second vote is required!!
The people in the UK have a very strong tool to use when they disagree with the seated government, it is called an election, we don't need guns to elect a different leader or government.
the UK is a democratic country and unlike the USA each individual vote is counted towards a final outcome. Interesting I read today in a Chinese paper that certain parts of America are now reassessing the role of the electoral College overruling the popular vote, so maybe by the time the next USA election occurs a new and fairer system will be in place.

I didn't post stats on my country or yours. You ASSume I am unaware of it. So like most, you throw it back. I have not once justified my own countries issues. Unlike people like you who go it's our right. It's your fellow country mens right to live as well but you won't address the FACT gun violence is a massive contribution to your death rate over there.

You and others need to learn how to communicate with people from other countries. Instead of being so damn disrespectful.

This is one of the many reasons I do not like Trump. He does not lead by example and then people like you feel it's ok to be disrespectful to others in how you approach them.

The OP clearly has issues with people from the UK. Which is why he made the thread. You like many jump on it and instead of holding a civilised conversation. Feel it is ok to preach to me, an English person about my own damn country. When I have engaged you and the OP directly, asked you questions you have projected and refused to answer them. Shame on you!

I told you I do not respect you or people like you because of how YOU choose to behave. I stand by my comment previously made. That a lot of you could start wars with your mouths.
