A year or two ago there was a TV program showing how much food was been wasted before it left the farms where it was been grown because the shape/size wasn't up to standard. This worked and now the supermarkets are selling this veg/fruit and in the case on the chain we use it is called wonky vegetables etc and are even advertising they sell it on the TV. Also there is food waist bins for each house which goes off to be composted. Also a few years ago the biggest supermarket chain was given a huge kick up their backside when it was exposed how much food was wasted in their warehouses and never got to the shops such as fresh supply of apples put in front of apples already on the shelf's and had gone off in the warehouses.

We are consuming it in every way. It goes up through the food chain, and we are top of that food chain.
Yet we are the only ones in that food chain that 'deserve' it. The birds and fish are innocent victims.

I don’t think anyone deserves to be afflicted by the carelessness of another and innocent creatures in particular... Richard Attenborough in his Blue Planet shows a Whale grieving for her calf which was dead for 5 days and she couldn’t let it go!
Most likely poisoned by her milk which was poisoned by plastic.

Not an awful lot sadly

When I first came to China, I was expecting lots of hungry people walking about and small expensive supermarkets, instead I found huge and cheap supermarkets, filled with new produce every day, the out of date thrown into bins and sent to landfills.
I was genuinely appalled at the waste of food when taken out for a dinner, the host would always order far more food than could possibly be eaten, at the end of the meal the wasted food just shoved into a large container to be thrown.
Ten years later not much has changed except in certain areas waste food is bought very cheaply and used by pig farmers as swill. And in some restaurants, you can buy a plastic box and take any leftover food home with you, this happens when it is a family meal, but "Losing face" stops that when a business or similar meal.
I genuinely hope this will improve as time goes by, food waste is one of man's terrible blights on the world and with absolutely no excuse to continue.

serene56: I think the litigious factor might be lifting, in terms of companies being fearful of being sued by people getting sick from food coming from these sources

Around here, Ive seen perfectly good leftover bakery products being collected and distributed within 24 hours, no problem
Actually i started a thread earlier on in the year along similar lines ... "Oh What A Waste", describing on one occasion on my shopping trip, seeing a stack of bread loaves and rolls (including top brands) being thrown away in the dumpster of my local (major) supermarket wow, rather than bothering to offer it up to customers at markdown prices sigh
I have no doubt this practice happens all too regularly ... and not just at this particular supermarket, but prevalent with others throughout Australia ...
Seems almost criminal when there are so many hungry and starving people in the world sad:

It may be because the Store manager is not allowed to sell past a certain time.

My ex father in law was the store manager of a famous UK supermarket, it was in a large city centre, he started leaving a trolly outside at night filled with out of date food, so the homeless etc could help themselves.
But the Head office was scared someone would sue if they became ill, so made him stop that practise. Unbelievable and a reason he took early retirement, so they lost one of their best managers.

What the United States, Canada, Australia, and many other developed countries throw out, food and otherwise, would make many people in less fortunate countries really, really rich.

Food stamps has really diluted how valuable food is. Promise you this~ "If they grew their own food, they wouldn't waste a bit" - My opinion. Food stamps. should only be valid for seeds mumbling

A store employee was taking food off the shelf and throwing it in a grocery cart. I asked him if the store gives it to homeless people. He said No because it has an expiration date and they don't want to take a chance that someone will get sick.

In my opinion that is B.S. Homeless people would be glad to get day old bread or milk.

Furthermore, the expiration date doesn't always mean that the food is spoiled after that specific date.

The United States wastes a huge amount of food and I don't know how to change that.

Here, they sell off food that is near their expiration date in a special section of the fridge/shelf.
Many people save lots of money buying this perfect food cheaply.

Always a good place to look and if you don't want to eat it that day put it in the freezer until you want it.
