M4_Mischief: Religion is a tool used to take you away from yourself lest you learn just how powerful you really are.....
Religion is a tool used to obscure reality so you can delude yourself into a sense of significance and power you don’t possess. Atheism or science is in theory the humbling one that says you don’t have a prize place in creation.
The reason the capitalist right and the religious right are in bed together is because of the raw power of mythical belief. Confidence, fanaticism and work ethic can be bolstered by religion. Science is the opposite, science doesn’t win because it produces the most powerful and determined individual it wins because it grasps how external reality works. It wins because it sees the bigger picture not because it produces the most ruthless individual. Atheism really is about the bigger picture, not self-promotion. The whole being greater than the sum of its parts is why science wins.

Delusions of self-importance is precisely the thing science is moving away from. Anything that sounds like glorifying yourself or ambition is not in the spirit of science although the main opponent of old religion is not atheism it’s second religiousness. Second. Religiousness is the spirit of religion in a chaotic and disorganised form which retains the sense that creation revolves around you the centre of everything.
Religion? - Aliens visited us in the past and our ancestors saw them as gods . Interesting as most (or all) religions believe in a "God in the sky." .
Definition of religion -set of stories, beliefs, practices and rules with a God or Gods. Reality - whatever a group of people decide it is convenient for them or for the group. (look at all major "religions" history, and how we (humans) use religion according to our own interest- google pastor wants a jet, etc, etc).
Discussing "religion" is nonintellectual - its stupid, as all or most religions have the same principle, and promote peace, compassion and love, etc. (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.).

I was listening to some talks with Dalai Lama who said that there was no real reason for a Western person to become a Buddhist, since everything he was searching for in Buddhism he could also find in Christianity. Although on the surface religions seem very different, basically they are very similar. All of them teach people how to become a good person, have (more or less similar) important sets of rules (don't kill, don't steal, etc.), teach that there's more to existence than this life form and that there is something/someone that transcendents us (God). Religions are just different paths to the same source. But, of course, many people are more interested in the surface and formality of religions than their essence. Or - the religion is just a part of their tradition, identity, something they belong to and it defines them to a certain extent.

Your post is clear and to the point.
Interesting you mention Buddhism, although i see it a bit different to religions because it doesn't require a belief in any dogma at all. - "Don't take the teachings on faith, investigate for yourself".
we humans still acting the same way we did before in clans/tribes, and we do use religion (or football, war, even CS) to find some kind of meaning to our existence. or reality.

That's true, yet Buddhism also has all sorts of beliefs incorporated - for example - the belief in reincarnation. The idea of God itself isn't very important - personal self-realization (enlightenment) is. The philosophy is also a very important part - so many (especially Western) people tend to think that Buddhism is more philosophy and less religion.

It also creates the feeling of belonging, being part of something bigger than us. Although, I think that nowadays more and more people tend to have their own spiritual path or they simply understand the religion they belong to in the way that is most comfortable to them. Sometimes I think that there are no two people in the world who have the same idea of God and spirituality, no matter what religion they belong to (if they do at all). Spirituality is actually pretty individual and personal.

That´s my view. "Spirituality is actually pretty individual and personal". as Rumi said, "The lamps are different, but the light is the same."
" belonging, being part of something bigger than us"- Belonging to a particular group—a pack—is something that’s written into our DNA. This was the defense against the hunters in the past. and we still have it. We do have new toys, but we still acting the same as we always did -our actions are always done out of self-interest.
Most people have run away from "religions", but most are still connected to a/the tribe. The idea of "peace to all living things" is not absorbed yet.

Interesting.....
Trying to score points with the ladies?!?!
Because.....
Bogart_1960:
"Christianity peaceful- YES
Judaism peaceful - YES
Islam peaceful- YES
Hinduism peaceful - YES
ALL RELIGIONS WANT PEACE ! .
Do the Jews read Torah? Do Christians read the Bible? Do Muslims read the Quran? - YES.
Do they want to enact and promote every part of what they read? - NO, only morons and fanatics do. Are you one ?
Only morons (and CS is full of them) will try to prove that one religion is better than another.. history is full of examples of intolerance and bigotry and what happens when malicious ignorance blends with power and communication. and Internet is a powerful tool !
