Japan will deploy a helicopter carrier to the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. How will Beijing respond?

Japan will send a large helicopter carrier to the South China Sea and Indian Ocean for a second straight year as it looks to bolster its presence in the strategic maritime region with annual tours, two Japanese officials said.

The Kaga, which is as big as any aircraft carrier operated by the Japanese Imperial Navy in the second world war, is designated as a destroyer to keep it within the bounds of those constitutional restraints.

Based in Kure in western Japan, the Kaga was commissioned in March last year and its primary mission is anti-submarine warfare.

Its tour of the South China Sea and Indian Ocean follows a two-month trip to the region from May by the Osumi, an amphibious transport ship.

Malaysia suspends construction of major Belt and Road rail project

The project owner of Malaysia's US$20 billion East Coast Railway Link has told its main Chinese contractor to suspend work, both companies said on Wednesday (Jul 4), raising uncertainty about the future of part of China's Belt and Road plan.

The 688km East Coast Rail Link will connect the South China Sea in the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia with strategic shipping routes in the west and is a major part of China's infrastructure push across Asia and beyond.

Malaysian Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has said he planned to visit China soon to renegotiate the terms of the deal and said in a statement on Tuesday that the ECRL would only become economically feasible if there was a drastic reduction in costs.

US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on every single Chinese import into America as the world's two largest economies exchanged the first blows in a trade war that isn't set to end anytime soon.

After months of rhetoric, a 25 per cent levy on $US34 billion ($46 billion) of Chinese goods entering the US took effect just after midnight Washington time on Friday (2pm AEST on Friday) with farming plows and airplane parts among the products targeted. China hit back immediately via duties on US shipments including soybeans, whiskey and automobiles.

KIM LANDERS: While China has been annoyed by Australia's new foreign interference laws, Beijing is now displeased with New Zealand.

New Zealand's recently released strategic defence policy statement has some frank language about China's actions in the South China Sea, and its wider ambitions.

It talks about how China is challenging the existing international rules-based order, and flags the disruptions caused by growing Chinese influence in the Pacific.

Winston Peters is New Zealand's acting Prime Minister while Jacinda Ardern is on maternity leave.

He's also the Foreign Minister and leader of the New Zealand First Party.

He joins me on the line now.

Mr Peters, good morning.

WINSTON PETERS: Good morning.

KIM LANDERS: What specifically has China said to your government?

Palestinian teenagers killed in Gaza as Israel carries out its biggest airstrike campaign in years

Updated about 3 hours ago

Israel said it carried out the airstrike after Hamas fired dozens of rockets into Israel throughout the day, threatening to trigger an all-out war after weeks of growing tensions along the volatile border.

Three Israelis were reportedly injured when one of the rockets landed on a residential home.

Witnesses say Israeli warplanes dropped four bombs on an empty building near a Hamas police and security compound, reducing the old structure to rubble.

Striking in the heart of Gaza City is typically only seen during full-blown conflicts like the war of 2014 and could mark a sign that violence is escalating.

The Australian navy has been invited to accompany the pride of Britain’s fleet, the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, when it comes to the Pacific - a joint show of strength that will be interpreted as a reply to growing Chinese influence and activity in the region.

It has emerged that the UK plans to sail HMS Queen Elizabeth to the Pacific in 2021 amid concerns regarding freedom of navigation in the region.

HMS Queen Elizabeth will sail to the Pacific on her maiden deployment in 2021 according to an ambassador.

The U.K. navy has invited the Australian navy to participate in joint military exercises in the Pacific, which may include a "freedom of navigation" exercise in the South China Sea, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.

The U.K. navy's tour of the Pacific will include the HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest warship ever built by the U.K.

Williamson did not say whether the HMS Queen Elizabeth would conduct a pass through the South China Sea, but former U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that is was on the agenda.

Syria condemns Israeli evacuation of White Helmets rescue workers as 'criminal operation'

The Syrian government has accused the White Helmets, also known as Syria Civil Defence, of being a Western-sponsored terrorist organisation.

Israel-Russia talks break down on position of Iranian troops

Later on Monday, Israel rebuffed a new Russian offer to keep Iranian forces in Syria away from the Golan Heights ceasefire line, an Israeli official said, complicating Moscow's bid to stabilise the country as the civil war there wanes.

The latest disagreement arose in a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a senior Russian delegation dispatched to Jerusalem as Syrian government forces routed rebels near the Golan.

The Xenamnoy dam in Attapeu province, 550 kilometres south of the capital Vientiane, was reportedly built to hold 1 billion tons of water, and is 1.6 kilometres wide.

A volunteer emergency organisation, Vientiane Rescue, said the dam wall broke last night after heavy monsoonal rains.

Reports on one media site said millions of tons of water had inundated surrounding land, washing away villages and homes.

Laos dam collapse HORROR: Hundreds missing as 5 BILLION litres of water destroy villages
A DAM collapse in Laos has left hundreds missing and many feared dead as the equivalent of two million Olympic swimming pools flooded an area.

The concerns of the green groups over the environemental impact of the projects were hardened into a full-on international dispute in 2012 when neighbouring Cambodia and Vietnam lodged fierce objections to the building of the Xayaburi dam which they said would severely impact fish stocks.

But Laos went ahead with the $100m dam - built by a Thai company with Thai money with almost all of the electricity pre-sold to Thailand.

It is due to send the majority of electricity, 90 percent, to Thailand, and the rest would be offered to Laos.

The collapse at the hydroelectric dam in Attapeu province late on Monday sent flash floods through six villages, Lao News Agency said.

Hydroelectric ambitions in Laos

The government in Laos has launched an ambitious dam-building scheme to become the "battery of Asia"
Laos sits on the Mekong River and its tributaries - a perfect location for hydro power
The country has 39 hydroelectric power plants, and 53 more are being planned or built
By 2020, Laos also plans to build 54 more electricity transmission lines and 16 substations
Laos already exports two thirds of its hydropower, with electricity making up roughly 30 percent of all Laotian exports

Russia and China Rapidly Building Gold Reserves In Yet Another Attack on the Dollar

“China and Russia have been aggressively accumulating their official gold reserves over the last 10 to 15 years.” When that process started, the two countries originally held a total of less than 400 tons of gold. “But now,” he went on, “both these nations hold a combined 3670 tons of gold." Other reports suggest the actual total acquired totals may be even higher, but this is still a major shift in ownership of the precious metal.

With the gold accumulations by Russia and China considered in the mix, it may be only a short time before global traders wake up to see the gold-backed petro-yuan a reality, and the U.S. dollar kicked under in a far more dramatic drop than many might ever have expected.

European countries are already shifting some of their foreign currency reserves away from the dollar and into yuan.

Philip Klinkmüller, a financial partner with German based Hopf-Klinkmüller Capital Management has stated there is a visible trend in China and Russia to buy more bullion to end their dependency on the US dollar, and has suggested that over the next two decades global financial markets will see a significant devaluation of the US Dollar.

According to the World Gold Council, China and Russia are ranked sixth and seventh on the list of country with the largest gold reserves, with 1,843 tons and 1,655 tons respectively. First is the US with 8,134 tons, followed by Germany (3,380 tons) and the IMF (2,814 tons).

China will soon take part in unprecedented joint military exercises in Russia, sending 30 aircraft, 900 tanks, and 3,200 personnel to its neighbor’s far east.

Russia’s drills, held every four years, are the largest since the early 1980s, and the inclusion of Chinese troops, a first, is seen as a major geopolitical shift. Moscow and Beijing each want to send a signal to Washington with military cooperation—though it’s China, not Russia, that the US now considers its main threat.
