Memo to the Pomgolians- It was unfashionable to be a convict/convict descent up until the early 80's. Around the time of Fosters being a popular drink. These days, something nothing being a Pom, very trendy having convict lineage.

I've no time for snivelling behind the scenes.

Miss Manners (Judith Martin) has often warned against the illusion that you're a bunch of good buddies who happen to work at the same place; you can still be sacked.

Hmm yeah I think most attend simply because they enjoy it and good for them thumbs up

But I like to have lines drawn when it comes to people I work with, especially when it comes to senior management conversing

I think it might avoid some tricky situations in the workplace later on somehow confused

Yeah..... these employer arranged after-work functions can be a bit of a trap.
I used to restrict myself and only attend the annual Christmas function. That said, I would often have friday after-work drinks and maybe a meal, with a few like-minded colleagues.
Seems to me that you're striking a good balance with your choice of attendance. Nothing worse than attending worthless functions that you feel obligated to attend.

Not for me. I prefer work and my private life to be seperate. I have also seen how it impacts others. Generally a negative.

Only attend if you're comfortable with it.

I used to work with an organisation, similar to your own.....and gossip was rife....which turned me off the idea of becoming too involved. I like to keep certain aspects of my private life......well, private.

Go, if you feel so inclined, but only if you feel you'll enjoy it, and be wary sharing too much personal info.

...and remember.....NEVER screw with the crew....conversing

I avoid it as much as possible I make excuses a lot. Mainly because they are damn boring its just an excuse for them to drink like a fish from morning till afternoon they don't even serve lunch! I endured few of these, I now only attend the really important ones and stay for an hour max. I don't like socializing with colleagues unless they are friends of mine. I would rather be home relaxing in front of the tv.
