kornbluth: Both.
Re your original Q, I always tried to get paid for whatever I felt like doing at the moment, and to stash away as much as possible in case one day I didn't feel like it. As important as money, to me, was what I spent my time doing. Money is sometimes recoverable; Time is not.
I hate working for money. The longest paid job I've ever had, only lasted for a couple months.
The longest volunteer job I ever had, lasted over 4 years: running a Salvation Army kitchen.
The value of money is stipulated, not objective. A dollar with a multi-trillion dollar debt attached to it, is proof you're trillions of dollars in debt.
I lived over 4 1/2 years without touching or using any money at all; and that's the only time in my life, I weighed over 200 pounds.
When I didn't use money, I'd spend my time walking around picking fruits to share with everyone for free. On most days, I fed at least 10 people, with food that didn't cost a dime.
When I didn't use money, I was never worried about keeping enough cash on hand to invest. I always ate my fill; and since you can't keep food in a bank: I always shared what I had left.
Jesus taught us, Selling what we have; and feeding the poor, would lay up treasure for ourselves in heaven.
I still meet people who's family members I fed over 30 years ago; and they still pay me back.
One of my best friend's lives down the street from me. When I first moved into my new house, me and him almost had a fight.
When he asked his brother if he knew me... He remembered me feeding him, and his family in the 80's.
Now, I'm part of their "hanai family;" and if they see me walking home, I get invited in for coffee, breakfast, lunch, or dinner; and they bring me food, to my door.
If I spent my time working for money, my life wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is today.
Money doesn't motivate me; but I love working for love.
