Mum and dad and Danny saw the passing out parade at Puckapunyal It was a long march from cadets The sixth battalion was the next to tour and it was me who drew the card We did Canungra and Shoalwater before we left And Townsville lined the footpaths as we marched down to the quay This clipping from the paper shows us young and strong and clean And there's me in me slouch hat with me SLR and greens God help me I was only nineteen From Vung Tau riding Chinooks to the dust at Nui Dat I'd been in and out of choppers now for months And we made our tents a home, V.B. and pinups on the lockers And an Asian orange sunset through the scrub And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? And night time's just a jungle dark and a barking M.16? And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means? God help me I was only nineteen A four week operation, when each step can mean your last one on two legs It was a war within yourself But you wouldn't let your mates down 'til they had you dusted off So you closed your eyes and thought about somethin' else And then someone yelled out contact, and the bloke behind me swore We hooked in there for hours, then a God almighty roar And Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon God help me He was goin' home in June And I can still see Frankie, drinkin' tinnies in the Grand Hotel On a thirty-six hour rec. leave in Vung Tau And I can still hear Frankie, lying screaming in the jungle 'Til the morphine came and killed the bloody row And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real I caught some pieces in my back that I didn't even feel God help me I was only nineteen And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep? And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet? And what's this rash that comes and goes Can you tell me what it means? God help me I was only nineteen

The Battle of Epping Forest / Selling England by the pound / Genesis / 1973... By all accounts, based on a true story of east end gang rivalry in England, but I couldn't tell you when....
Bruce Springsteen - Tougher Than the Rest 6:34 · YouTube LYRICS Well It's Saturday night You're all dressed up in blue I been watching you awhile Maybe you been watching me too So somebody ran out Left somebody's heart in a mess Well if you're looking for love Honey I'm tougher than the rest Some girls they want a handsome Dan Or some good-lookin' Joe On their arm some girls like a sweet-talkin' Romeo Well 'round here baby I learned you get what you can get So if you're rough enough for love Honey I'm tougher than the rest The road is dark And it's a thin thin line But I want you to know I'll walk it for you any time Maybe your other boyfriends Couldn't pass the test Well if you're rough and ready for love Honey I'm tougher than the rest Well it ain't no secret I've been around a time or two Well I don't know baby maybe you've been around too Well there's another dance All you gotta do is say yes And if you're rough and ready for love Honey I'm tougher than the rest If you're rough enough for love Baby I'm tougher than the rest Songwriters: Bruce Springsteen
My life is brilliant My love is pure I saw an angel Of that I'm sure She smiled at me on the subway She was with another man But I won't lose no sleep on that 'Cause I've got a plan You're beautiful You're beautiful You're beautiful, it's true I saw your face in a crowded place And I don't know what to do 'Cause I'll never be with you Yes, she caught my eye As we walked on by She could see from my face that I was Flyin' high And I don't think that I'll see her again But we shared a moment that will last till the end You're beautiful You're beautiful You're beautiful, it's true I saw your face in a crowded place And I don't know what to do 'Cause I'll never be with you La-la-la-la La-la-la-la La-la-la-la, la You're beautiful You're beautiful You're beautiful, it's true There must be an angel with a smile on her face When she thought up that I should be with you But it's time to face the truth I will never be with you Songwriters: Amanda Ghost / James Blount / Sacha Skarbek
Arthur_Sixpence: What a great song Molly... I can't get it out of my head that this song was written specifically for someone in joni's life... Or maybe I'm mixing up with Carly Simon's you're so vain... Maybe you know...
I think it was more about the social issues in this case. You're So Vain definitely was.

Almost anything by Tom Waits... Heart of Saturday night, Martha, old shoes, old 55....dammit, the whole of 'closing time'...a near perfect slice of downbeat Americana... And it's deedees Bruce post that drew my attention...

You're so vain came on the break up with James Taylor... I wonder if he ever spoke to her again after it's runaway chart success... Jesus, just imagine...

Was it definitely him? She wouldn't say for years who it was about. But I always thought it was about Warren Beatty.
Two days past eighteen He was waiting for the bus in his army green Sat down in a booth in a cafe there Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair He's a little shy so she gives him a smile And he said, "Would you mind sittin' down for a while And talking to me? I'm feeling a little low." She said, "I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go."
So they went down and they sat on the pier He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care I got no one to send a letter to Would you mind if I sent one back here to you
I cried Never gonna hold the hand of another guy Too young for him they told her Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier Our love will never end Waitin' for the soldier to come back again Never more to be alone when the letter said A soldier's coming home
So the letters came from an army camp In California then Vietnam And he told her of his heart It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of He said, "When it's getting kinda rough over here, I think of that day sittin' down at the pier. And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile. Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile."
One Friday night at a football game The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang A man said, "Folks would you bow your heads For a list of local Vietnam dead." Crying all alone under the stands Was a piccolo player in the marching band And one name read but nobody really cared But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair
Arthur_Sixpence: Probably my favorite song, next to private investigations...
Just had another listen to that. Old Dire Straits music always had a good story to it. Pity the newer stuff is a bit bland. Some Linkin Park has a music has a story, abet in a dark kind of way.
Sorry folks, this would just take too long to type on the phone... But it's worth a minute of your time...
Here's the song if you'd rather... Another early Gabriel / Genesis offering... I believe they were the most imaginative band of their day in terms of lyrical content...
