Do years spent on Facebook, Twitter etc etc build a profile of who we really are? Are we exposing our inner selves without being aware of it? Does this even matter?

One thing the internet has increased is staged behaviour, the sense of living out your own advert. Who we really are wouldn't feature such a heavy role for marketing, we're looking at the end of spontaneous action and critical thinking(except in a tiny minority). Individualism is imploding into great performers who direct the whole show.
I have chosen to not be on Facebook. (Shock, I know!) Yet, my life is an open book. I don't really care who knows.
This site has its share of scammers, so a quick search can prove authenticity.
As for exposing ourselves... I believe that deep inside each person is a desire to be truly known - the good, the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately, most of what we choose to display is mostly the good. (or with rare exception, a few on here only exhibit their ugly side... )
So, it goes back to whomever plans to use it and for what reasons. A practical tool can also be used as a weapon. We are at the mercy of the wielder.

A salient point, but I dare to disagree. Those who are using social media as a stage, and are 'living out an advert' are a small core who are driving the blogger space, ie making money out of creating content. The rest of the sheeple are just clicking and liking, which is the data trail marketers want and love.
Kaylana04: Good questions. It depends on who is looking.

Or a profile of who we really are not?
Google and yahoo and many others are gathering information about us constantly, mainly for sale to marketing companies. You can't get away from it except to come of the internt.

I only post professional stuff on FB, and that's the only reason I have an account... So, no, I don't spend more than few minutes on it and no, it doesn't expose my inner self...

I think it makes monsters.... Opinions, free hate, the safety of being out of range of any consequence of action, 'face-bullying', trolling... This is the ugliness of of a free platform.... I'm more concerned about what it's doing to people in terms of social decline than I am about information gathering... I should add, I have Facebook so I can have messenger, which is my default communication tool...

Social media has created a generation of zombies, staring into a billion monitors for signs of life. The loss of productive hours and activities must be incalculable. From books and magazines, to radio, to TV, and now to the internet, the rot is deep and terminal. We have become a world of passive spectators. It won't end well.

The second time today I find myself agreeing with you...

Kaylana04: I was just thinking, I'd enjoy a discussion with the two of you... Pretty level headed, you both are. Cheers!
(But to post such a comment would leave a trail.... And someone might read more into it than what it really was... A compliment on both of your's intellect.)
