I have chosen to not be on Facebook. (Shock, I know!) Yet, my life is an open book. I don't really care who knows.
This site has its share of scammers, so a quick search can prove authenticity.
As for exposing ourselves... I believe that deep inside each person is a desire to be truly known - the good, the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately, most of what we choose to display is mostly the good. (or with rare exception, a few on here only exhibit their ugly side... )
So, it goes back to whomever plans to use it and for what reasons. A practical tool can also be used as a weapon. We are at the mercy of the wielder.

i like what you said, and i agree with you about most folks want to be truly known (and accepted), while being authentic to themselves.
here...i think we just see an aspect or part of a person; that part they wish to expose here.
i believe, over time, more is revealed through patterns.... but i still don't think it gives a complete knowing of the other person.
i don't have facebook, twitter, instagram...yada yada....
nor do i watch news on tv, or watch much tv at all. we tend to record and watch movies or series that we like.
i like to keep it simple, do a bit of research online, but stay away from the media fear mongering.
