I don't think it's that bad. It only seems to be because now information goes around the world in seconds and people are more confused and scared than ever.Spin and propaganda have existed since Adam and Eve. There will always be propaganda as long as there are morons who believe that people whom they've never met actually care one iota about them or their lives.

They FELL due to many reasons, some social, some military and some from outside pressure.
The ancient Greek civilisation didn't "fail" since we're still using their system of government.
The Roman empire didn't "fail", we're still using their military tactics and many other aspects of their civilisation.
Just because a civilisation is no more doesn't mean they failed.
