I read somewhere that cats are just partly domesticated, so petting and cuddling isn't natural, but learned behaviour for them. So, they do allow to be petted, but then - sometimes - suddenly "remember" that it's not something that is supposed to be done and either go away or get angry and drive away their owner (sometimes with sometimes without scratching and hissing). ------ This thread has reached the limit ------

something to that....I also instinctively know that a cat is going to do as it pleases. But, never think a cat doesn’t “ know” he’s doing something he knows is wrong or will irritate you. They’ll grab an item and run away, even if you’ve never scolded them for it. If my guy is up on a counter, for example, even though I’m not trying to shoo him off, he’ll act like I have, and jump and scoot out, anyway. Hmmmmm.......

My late cat used to do something naughty from time to time just to show that she was the boss. For example, she would come and lie on my pillow. She knew that she wasn't supposed to lie on my pillow and wouldn't do that normally. But in her "naughty phase" she would. And then she looked at me and waited to see what I was going to do. If I tried to take a pillow - she would hiss at me ready to fight for it. If I pretended that I didn't care - she would sleep there for a while and then leave.
Such "demonstrations of power" weren't that common, but they happened every once in a while.
Your cat might do the same - he does something naughty just to show you that he can.
