...causes your device to take an action, that means your microphone had to be on and listening for the command.
What other words or phrases trigger your device to take an action?
I often hear people lamenting that someone else, such as law enforcement, might turn on their microphone and listen in, but what if your always on microphone is listening for keywords and phrases you're not aware of? If it's not yet, it will be.
Imagine pushing out two advertisements into two different markets and listening for which one increases the mention of your brand name more. That's valuable information. I think I read somewhere that some smart TV manufactures already claim ownership of the audio they record while listening for commands.
I have avoided all devices like Alexa to date. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I feel with those devices we are being used rather than being the users

I make some privacy for convenience trade offs, but I'm not on board with the always on microphones either Molly.
2intrigued: Not sure we have to worry too much especially if you happen to have an accent.
Problem is not that these AI devices may be listening, it is more about the loss of reading/writing ability IMO. We can already see how some people cannot write a simple sentence without mistakes, or use sentence structure like “ur” “u” etc. When they no longer need to write anything as they can use voice commands, how long before mankind loses the ability to read and write? Communication is what separates us from most other animals, especially reading and writing. To me, Alexa, Cortina, Siri are going to destroy human literacy and in so doing, is a step backwards to pre-caveman.

Yep, technology is great until such time as it starts dumbing people down....a step backwards indeed.
I was at my friend's place a few days ago and she has Alexa. I had a laugh asking it dirty filthy nasty questions and listening to the funny replies but I wouldn't have it in my house.

I tend to go the other way believing that communication skills is all we’ll have. To have no skills apart from words.
2003 was the height of text speak I would argue that smartphones have increased literacy over the old mobile. The autocorrect creates the habit of seeing words spelt correctly and there’s a lot of this habit, people spend more time communicating than ever.
I contend that kids today will be witty and sharp with words and that’s about it. They’ll be better at that than our ancestors. It’s the walking, the breeding and fighting, the cooking and the cleaning which are the skills we won’t have. Rhetoric will thrive it’s anything practical that’s the concern.
