It appears that text messaging between family members and close friends...who live some distance away...has become the norm since the advent of new apps???
Have people lost the skill of direct conversations (phone calls.. Skype..)?
I myself find a voice much more human and enjoyable than a soulless text...especially when sending special greetings to a loved one.
I did something new today... I didn't text the people that matter the most to me... But I always send them my thoughts...don't know if they get them tho... I am tired of words...
Special greetings is one thing (and yes, I'd prefer hearing it instead of reading). But sometimes it's about practical information, as "when your train arrives?" People work, exercise, go to theatre and concerts, have dinner with friends (and dates)... To leave it all for a trivial conversation with a relative? Dunno... What's the point?

So nice to see you here today Pk girl.
I feel the same too! Every Xmas..new year...birthday etc.. Same messages...same replies..
Wouldn't it be nice to hear a friendly voice for a change?
Sending thoughts is a good idea but...not many will pick it up?
Anyway...wish you a happy New year and new thoughts and ideas.

I was mostly referring to special greetings like today ?
For example..I didn't get one phone call from anybody but..many texts which I couldn't be bothered to reply.
But...I did call my mother as she doesn't have a cell phone and apps.
I understand a text as mail: the sender doesn't want to / has no time to speak, but they cared about you so much that they bothered to show it. If you don't want to respond - it's your choice. You can always call and check the pulse, so to say. Can turn out that the sender didn't want to disturb you, but would be glad to talk if you show initiative. Or perhaps, they are busy. Or sick. Or just that - they don't want to talk to you, but still are willing to maintain some connection.

Happy New year Dani... I'll keep on sending with the hope they pick them up... If not, well, I tried... Nobody wants to talk today...texts are so indifferent...

Yes I'm sure there are many reasons and excuses Tule..
One2note: It's difficult to give everybody you know, a phone conversation, especially this time of the year
Of course but... What about your family? We use to have a Skype conversation with 4 or 5 of us at Xmas and other important events. But now...those are replaced by a one liner text
I'm one of those people, who understand written word better than spoken. Hence, I prefer to correspond. I use phone only with very close people or if there's some kind of urgency or if there's no other way to transfer information, as ordering taxi.

I agree!
I'm sure SOME would love to talk but...?
Before I had my smart phone people had no choice and couldn't text me.

Well...to each their own I suppose.
I haven't had a smart phone for a long time and therefore not used to texting.
Up till not long ago Xmas greetings ..birthdays etc...were done over the phone or sending a card. Which was a lot nicer!

Never known a 4/5 Skype conversation! As for my family, I spent time with them during the Christmas period, as it was traditional in days gone by .
I think people spend too much time on phones anyway & I find it just as offensive to phone , rather than make the effort to meet .
