ChesneyChrist: Another factor is that for many people it is their job to be hospitable, there has never been this industrial abundance of paid politeness. We spend trillions on etiquette in the developed world, can we honestly claim that good manners cost nothing?
ChesneyChrist: Perhaps we're paid to behave in an artifical way - polite is artificial - so much of the time that people won't do it for free anymore.
Anymore... It's hard to compare what used to be and what is, now. We live in a totally different world from barely 20yrs ago. It sucks but we have to make do with it because the only other choice is to complain and you know how far that gets you.
