i do , but they have to go through a list of questions first. I think it is more painful for them to have to put up with me.

I used to but I'm a bit more cautious these days after an unpleasant experience with one many years ago.
There are some more remote places in other countries though where it's the only realistic way of getting around and hitchhiking is the norm .
I rarely see people hitchhiking around where I live these days.

Neither!

I neither pick up hitch-hikers, nor am I "scared to death of them".

But as a former taxi driver, who used to earn a living from picking up people on the side of the road, I fail to see why I should now do so for free. I feel the same way as a hairdresser might feel if she saw someone standing by the side of the road with a sign reading "free haircut please".

Bnaughty: If I picked you up I´d let you shift my stick
If I had you, I wouldn't let you go.
Then there will be milk cartons with your face all over Spain.

I'm okay with it, as long as they see the sticker before they get in.

I go out of my way to pick up hitch-hikers, and take them miles out of my way.

I hitched all over America as a youth. I owe it to the universe, to help travellers.

I'm more concerned about poor people getting robbed by people with get away cars, than being robbed by hitch-hikers.

I got shot jumping out of a truck, on a hitch-hiking journey, and got beat up by a car load of guys, who also robbed me, on another trip.

I'd rather walk 20 miles, than give people who don't care about me, a chance to pass me by with my thumb out.

I walk unless someone offers me a ride. If they tell me to jump in the back of their truck, or have a tone they're doing me a big favor, I walk.

That's been my position on me hitch-hiking, for the last 25 years.

I feel better about walking in my integrity, than being a beggar.

Because I feel that way, I love to help people in obvious need, without making them feel indebted to me.

When I help anyone who has less than me, I make sure they know, they don't owe me a thing.

I owe for kindnesses I already received. I owe more than I can possibly pay back in my life.

Finding someone on the side of the road to help anonymously, is the best way I can think of to pay my debt.
