I used to but I'm a bit more cautious these days after an unpleasant experience with one many years ago. There are some more remote places in other countries though where it's the only realistic way of getting around and hitchhiking is the norm . I rarely see people hitchhiking around where I live these days.

Neither!
I neither pick up hitch-hikers, nor am I "scared to death of them".
But as a former taxi driver, who used to earn a living from picking up people on the side of the road, I fail to see why I should now do so for free. I feel the same way as a hairdresser might feel if she saw someone standing by the side of the road with a sign reading "free haircut please".
