English is unusual in that "goodbye" can mean either "see you again soon" or "you will never hear from me again".
In most languages, there are different terms, one for someone you expect to see again, and one for someone you don't. Saying to a chatmate in Latin America, for example "I'm off to be now, goodbye" will be seen as a sign that you are not interested in communicating ever again, not that you will message them again in the morning.
