Yep molly it used to be 12 shillings and sixpence. The license fee I think was a lot of money then so they thought only responsible people would own a dog

Irresponsible owners probably don't pay the licence fee still. It kind of annoys me to pay it as they do nothing about irresponsible owners still. I'd say the money just goes into central coffers instead of being used directly to target bad owners and cruelty.------ This thread is Archived ------

They were abolished in 1987.The price was originally 7s 6d, (seven shillings and six pence)or 35 1/2p. This was changed to 37p when the halfpenny was withdrawn in 1984

The dog licence was only for the non working dogs only and, the fee was set in the act of parliament so wasn't able to be put up and when it was stopped the cost of processing the licences was far higher than the money they were getting in.
