I would hope that Western nations will soon withdraw all troops from Afghanistan, where they have no business to be.
It took a special kind of stupid (i.e. the neo-cons) to get the USA and other Western nations involved in Afghanistan in the first place, when we had already witnessed the horrendous difficulties the Soviets had there.
Trump Finds Reason for the U.S. to Remain in Afghanistan: Minerals
President Trump, searching for a reason to keep the United States in Afghanistan after 16 years of war, has latched on to a prospect that tantalized previous administrations: Afghanistan’s vast mineral wealth, which his advisers and Afghan officials have told him could be profitably extracted by Western companies.
Mr. Trump has discussed the country’s mineral deposits with President Ashraf Ghani, who promoted mining as an economic opportunity in one of their first conversations. Mr. Trump, who is deeply skeptical about sending more American troops to Afghanistan, has suggested that this could be one justification for the United States to stay engaged in the country.
To explore the possibilities, the White House is considering sending an envoy to Afghanistan to meet with mining officials. Last week, as the White House fell into an increasingly fractious debate over Afghanistan policy, three of Mr. Trump’s senior aides met with a chemical executive, Michael N. Silver, to discuss the potential for extracting rare-earth minerals. Mr. Silver’s firm, American Elements, specializes in these minerals, which are used in a range of high-tech products.
Stephen A. Feinberg, a billionaire financier who is informally advising Mr. Trump on Afghanistan, is also looking into ways to exploit the country’s minerals, according to a person who has briefed him. Mr. Feinberg owns a large military contracting firm, DynCorp International, which could play a role in guarding mines — a major concern, given that some of Afghanistan’s richest deposits are in areas controlled by the Taliban.
galrads: how many more American lives will be lost there ?

Communism is crash course modernisation you may one day be able to work with. The middle east is a different epoch, wars of reformation where if we involves ourselves the medieval wins. The mistake was the effort to crush communism, we should have quarantined the place either their own communism or reformation would be preferable to what it is now.

America is always fighting far away from their own borders, while many people in the USA have hardly enough money to survive. If every country should take care of their own people with love, dignity and humanity, it would be a paradise on earth. But of course the American weapons lobby has big influence in all those wars, it makes them richer and richer.

Of course they do. They have the business of drug dealing and guns smuggling.

Not in the first instance it did not . It was a " we go get him" , if the Taliban had handed Bin Laden over there would have been no war . The stupidity came later with the rebuilding , introducing democracy . Lot more history in Afghanistan than the Russians .

But I think the intention was there from the beginning, to overthrow the government of Afghanistan, and replace it with one more acceptable to Washington.

I'm pretty confident that the neo-cons like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their hangers-on, were intending from the word "go" to institute regime change. Osama Bin Laden was simply a handy excuse.
That they seriously plotted to do this, even after seeing the quagmire the Russians had got themselves in, beggars belief.
