Personally i believe the Music industry has demised with the encroachment of Rap / Hip-hop over the years. Music based around simple bass rhythms and virtually tuneless melodies by "artists" of questionable talent blabbering on about all sorts of nonsense throughout their songs. As for mainstream Pop, as you say, it's "recycled simple riff pop" etc. In recent years i've switched more towards K-Pop. I don't understand the Korean lyrics, but at least the songs are tuneful and been more interesting than anything emanating out of the Western world of late
