Your ego is your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your "self." If you say someone has "a big ego," then you are saying he is too full of himself. (Google)
When someone say to you:
"You are gorgeous" "You're very bright" "You're very artistic" "Your logic is great" "I wish I was like you"
The ego is our conscious sense of who we are, the central complex of consciousness. It seeks complete autonomy over the self and commonly, from its narrow view of the world, it's task is, security and dominance. It's real purpose is to create a dialogue between the Self and the perceived world, although the ego likes to rule the roost in its frantic search for individualisaction.
I quite like this quote below from James Hollis, it seems quite apt on here.
"The ego is like a petty tyrant who must fulminate on the rightness of its position as a compensation for the swamp of doubt upon which it's castle is built."

I don't know about Buddhism but.. In shamanism... during the course of the medicine wheel work...we had to get rid of the Ego...as well as the roles we play in our life.
I believe in Buddhism there is something similar...so I've heard?

I believe getting the ego under control is paramount to development

Of course we need ego to go about our everyday business of conscious life, to mobilse our psychic energy to move towards our goals with some form of consistency and continuity. But we need to be constantly aware in order to loosen the egos grip. Without awareness, the ego will control us rather than the other way round. Many Buddhist retreats are silent retreats. I've never attended one, but often thought a silent retreat would, to a large degree, help to keep the ego in check.

If you say "I'm me", that me is your Ego talking. Without that Ego, we have no Self. Some people are so crushed by bullies, that the Self is so deeply buried, that only psychiatric treatment will help them slowly come out of that self-imposed Shell, created as a natural defence mechanism, survival.

Hi sweetie. Alexa, your computer assistant? I was just getting jealous here. From observation, you have a very healthy ego, and I don't say that of many. How are you feeling today?
