I immediately think of house animals, like your dog and cats. They spray their territory, to dissuade intruders.
Say you own the house, you are living in: Do you veto who comes into your yard and house? Do you relate to your town, as yours? Will you share: Your car, Family, Friends, etc?

bodleing2: It's called attachment and it's not very healthy.
That explains why no Brexit and the EU's existence
Territorial is defined as a member of a home defensive force, particularly of the Territorial Army of Britain. An example of a territorial is a member of a regional group for home defense for the British national defense system.

bodleing2: Like you say, the OP doesn't mean territorial in that context, possessiveness more like.
Exactly possessiveness vs sharing. Adults teach children to share, almost everything, even when they don't know eachother. But adults don't share. "Can I borrow your car?".. Hhhaaa.. No.

Google Territorial: 1. relating to the ownership of an area of land or sea. "territorial disputes" Zoology (of an animal or species) defending a territory. "these sharks are aggressively territorial" relating to an animal's territory. "the gerbils' territorial behaviour" 2. relating to a particular territory, district, or locality. "a bizarre territorial rite"

In the wild, animals mark their territory, and allow no competition within it. Are humans the same?

In the old days everybody had keys to everybody else’s house because strangers were not expected. Insurance and surveillance do what being territorial once did in today’s cosmopolitan international, money isn’t connected to a place it doesn’t have roots it has status.

In lots of places, people don't lock the doors, of their cars or houses, as they trust everyone in town. What happens when something suddenly goes wrong in that town? How do the people react?
