It might lower the point in general where suicude is considered the answer.

The epicurean values of consumer society and the first world match the rate of suicide in deepest darkest Africa. None of the rich countries suicide the least and I believe it’s because epicurean values(pain-avoidance)consider suicide to be the answer. When you make suicide the answer in law you may assist suicide in another way which is by lowering the constitution of everyone.

Our hedonistic and epicurean values imo make euthanasia almost inevitable and this will in turn amplify said values. It’s a hangover from old-fashioned values that we don’t allow euthanasia.

Anyway whatever small and silly thing is considered a problem in 2019 will be surpassed by the triviality of posterity as pain avoidance increasingly sets the tone of the times. To lose faith in we all have our cross to bear is part and parcel of our technological age, the AI running the world and systems taking the stress from the shoulders of an enfeebled human race.

Legal situation

The Swiss Criminal Code of 1937 outlaws "incitement or assistance to suicide from selfish motives" (Art. 115). Any active role in voluntary euthanasia ("manslaughter on request") is also outlawed, even if committed from "respectable motives" such as mercy killings (Art. 114). However, by omission, assisted suicide from non-selfish motives remains legal. For example, lethal drugs may be prescribed as long as the recipient takes an active role in the drug administration, but active euthanasia (such as the act of administering a lethal injection) is not legal. All forms of active euthanasia like administering lethal injection remain prohibited in Switzerland. Swiss law only allows providing means to commit suicide, and reasons for doing so must not be based on self-interest (such as monetary gain). Based on this legal situation, non-profit organisations administering life-ending medicine were first established in Switzerland in the 1980s.

Article 115 of the Swiss Criminal Code reads:

Inciting and assisting suicide: Any person who for selfish motives incites or assists another to commit or attempt to commit suicide shall, if that other person thereafter commits or attempts to commit suicide, be liable to a custodial sentence not exceeding five years or to a monetary penalty.

It should be noted, however, that the Swiss Criminal Code states that "English is not an official language of the Swiss Confederation. This translation is provided for information purposes only and has no legal force."

This regulation of assisted suicide also permits the assistance of voluntary euthanasia for non-resident foreigners, which has led to the phenomenon of "suicide tourism".

When an assisted suicide is declared, a police inquiry may be started. Since no crime has been committed in the absence of a selfish motive, these are mostly open and shut cases. Prosecution can occur if doubts are raised about the patient's competence to make an autonomous choice, or about the motivation of anyone involved in assisting the suicide. While there is no regulation on permissible reasons for the suicide, the major Swiss non-profit organisations dedicated to assisted suicide may require that a terminal illness has been diagnosed.
Debate

A complaint against the health department of the canton of Zurich on the part of a man suffering from bipolar affective disorder and desiring to be issued with pentobarbital by the state in order to end his life was rejected in a Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland decision of 3 November 2006. The court conceded that "It cannot be denied that an incurable, long-lasting, severe mental impairment similar to a somatic one can create a suffering out of which a patient would find his/her life in the long run not worth living anymore" but found that no case can be made that the state has any obligation to facilitate the availability of substances used for euthanasia, as had been argued by the plaintiff based on both the Swiss Federal Constitution and on article 8 of the ECHR.

In a referendum on 15 May 2011, voters in the canton of Zurich overwhelmingly rejected calls to ban assisted suicide or to outlaw the practice for non-residents. Out of more than 278,000 ballots cast, the initiative to ban assisted suicide was rejected by 85 per cent of voters and the initiative to outlaw it for foreigners was turned down by 78 per cent.

In a 2007 essay in the Hastings Center Report, bioethicist Jacob M. Appel advocated adopting similar rules in the United States.

But it still remains a "Slippery Slope".

It is pretty old-fashioned to say it is your duty to stay alive. To be committed to your own life through thick and thin will eventually go the same way as marriage.

Thanks for all this valuable information Conrad.
I was wondering myself about Switzerland.

A lot more complicated than I thought though? Hmmmm..

When you see films about people going to your country for assisted suicide..they seem to portray it as something quite easy.???

Maybe this is why so many want to go there for assistance?

I'm going to read all this again and absorb it..then I'll get back to you ok?

Good debate daniela, I think if two docs have talked to you and you have terminal illness they should be able to prescribe the sleeping pill.

I think you should be able to do it yourself, not waiting until you have to be assisted to die. That must have terrible affect on family member or doc who has signed the oath.

I can never compare putting down a dog with helping someone die...
It's a hard decision and very individual as well...
It should not be easy ... and too available...

Apparently...it is also illegal for doctors to assist their patients?
Maybe not all countries?dunno

As for doing it yourself...well..
First you need someone who to give you the correct drug..
Then..you need to be physically capable of drinking or taking the stuff..uh oh

Not always easy!dunno

There are clinics in Switzerland where you can get euthanized for a certain amount of money.

Personally, I think that everyone should be allowed to die in dignity.

I would euthanize all of you in case the law allowed me :-D wave

Yes people should be able to choose death or passing.
Yes this should be done by a procedure and watched over.

Yes you can safely make a format where people that want to leave this reality or earth or globe can make that decision.

Make the format and send people along the way.

it will only increase......
So long nobody dies because they were promised paradise and golden spoons

you will have to carry the Euthanasia out yourself,no one can legally do that for you!
The Law is clear on that!

The problem with the law in Switzerland is that people have to do it before they are ready.
For example, people with a horrible degenerative disease like ALS or muscular dystrophy.
Under the law, they have to be capable of administering the drug to themselves.
But the use of their hands may go before other areas, before they are feeling really bad, but they have to go while they still have the use of their hands.
