robplum: It is in my opinion a very stupid activity
Well if I were dying and in a drawn out process of misery and suffering, your opinion would be of absolutely no concern to me.

If you took the time to study a meaningful dharma you wouldn't be overly suffer misery and suffering because you would be armed with correct view and correct antidote to manage the misery and suffering you refer to.
Nihilism proposes you don't have nor need a view yet your expressing one.
Both of you are being quite unrealistic, if you never never go, you never never know, for me its sad to sit on the fence having carefully studied a 20,000 year old belief that provides antidotes for our ills listening to you guys profoundly stating you believe nothing while still proclaiming opinions that others including myself attempt to convey wrong pal
try checking out Lam Rim while you still enjoy this short human rebirth while you can. You don't need to join a isim but you would be able to have an informed view

If I were to "study" all the different types of mumbo jumbo people try to hoist on me, I would have time for nothing else, rob. When you are in the grips of a long drawn out death, in constant pain and barely able to do anything for yourself, I wonder if you will still hold so firmly to your beliefs.

euthanasia sounds like your putting someone down....assisted suicide is really what it is because the patient makes the choice....its not someone putting you to sleep without your permission....its all about what the patient chooses.....wave

aries1234: It seems the case you cited was dealt with compassionately, i cannot give an opinion on other cases not being in possesion of the facts and circumstances involved.

Personally I am not in fav,our of giving carte blanch to this action without many safeguards, but i have heard of doctors increasing the pain control dosage, to the the point for the pain control is fatal.

From my own point of view , my doctor asked me to sign a DNR form even though i have no illness, he said it's just a formality, I told him t stuff his formality, and changed doctors.
HE HAD a very high opinion of you!rolling on the floor laughing

Nothing proves God intended for people to undergo prolonged suffering before death. Doctors in U.S. frequently max the pain killer when a hospitalized terminal patient has had enough.

When anesthesia was first adopted many people thought it was against god because surgical patients should suffer.barf

The Hartheim Euthanasia Centre (German: NS-Tötungsanstalt Hartheim) was a killing centre involved in the Nazi euthanasia programme, also referred to as Action T4. The killing centre was housed in Hartheim Castle in the municipality of Alkoven, near Linz, Austria.

Hartheim statistics

In June 1945, during investigations by US Forces into the former gassing facility at Hartheim, the American investigating officer Charles Dameron broke open a steel safe in which the Hartheim statistics were found. This was a 39-page brochure produced for the internal purposes of the Nazi euthanasia programme (Aktion T4), and contained monthly statistics of the gassing of mentally and physically handicapped patients (called "disinfection" in the document) carried out in the six euthanasia institutions on the territory of the Reich. In 1968 and 1970 an ex-employee of the establishment revealed, as a witness, that he had to compile the material at the end of 1942. The Hartheim statistics included a page on which it was calculated that "disinfecting 70,273 people with a life expectation of 10 years" had saved food in the value of 141,775,573.80 Reichsmarks.

So you be better very careful whom you give the right to make the decisions!
