Friskyone: From what I understand, the cost of living there is high and they risk their lives putting out fires, even cancer causing. $40,000 is not a lot of money considering the living cost and the life of a human. Their jobs are VERY difficult too.
The $40,000 was just off the top my head for any job... The firefighters here currently start at $80,000 with full retirement... not bad...

charles_nz: In my country, teachers, who are already very well paid, and who get 10 weeks of paid holidays every year, are always demanding more money and going on strike to get it. They're like pigs at a trough!
But having said that, there may at times be legitimate things to protest about. I do, however, dislike teachers using their pupils as political pawns (as we saw recently with the climate change protests).
No offense, but I don't believe teachers are using their students as political pawns and I do believe that climate change issues are very important. JMO
bigjb62: Most Teachers in the US have become over paid Democrat party lackeys, who's main interest is indoctrinating young impressionable minds with the liberal agenda. Especially at the college level.

These safety issues are all good points but I think the firefighters have to realize these risks going into the job. I mean if i was a canary and a mining company in boomer, west virginia offered me a risky job sitting on a perch for 8 hours a day in a mine 1000 feet down @ 5 dollars an hour, i accept that wage under those conditions.

It would, in my view, be naive to believe that the climate change protests of mid March were not promoted by the teaching industry. Indeed, in this country at least, the teachers gave all the kids the day off, so they could go to the protest! (Or McDonalds).
In 1984, "nuclear free zones" were all the rage. My teacher at the time attempted to bully the class to vote in favour of declaring our classroom "nuclear free". She was nice about it, but it was a pretty one-sided argument she put before us, and her intentions were clear. I was the only one to vote against.
Teachers have always been using kids to suit their own agendas. Just like parents do. In my view, however, parents have more right to do this.
