galrads: What started the fire?
The roof has been burnt now, they should do the right thing and bulldoz that building to the ground... it's a derelict old building and is probably unsafe, get rid of it and build a new Mc donalds there.
As far as I'm concerned Australia better not donate a razoo as we have farmers in strife and it's not like France has ever donated to our grief stricken farmers.
galrads: I wonder if any of the cathedral’s stain glass windows and other art perished or survived. Anyone know?
The 3 big rose windows on the south, north, and west sides are still intact. the little rosette windows above the big rose windows on the north and south transept were destroyed. Don't think the wooden choir stalls made it or the choir organ. The grand or great organ in the loft balcony between the two towers seems to have survived and was not damaged by water because they put cement on the roof above it some years ago. It has a super computerized new console that was installed about 6 years ago.

The Catholic church will take actions to God for the remission of your sins if you promise to continue giving the holy sea your lunch money. Papa loves you so much that you are the first thing on his mind when he awakens each morning. You are blessed so why not give all
I heard the paintings that are in the many side chapels are OK but may need to be restored from smoke damage but did not suffer any water damage. The most sacred treasures of Notre Dame were kept in the treasury which is a side building connected to the cathedral and was not damaged by fire or water. They are now cared for and kept by the Louve in their art storage buildings. This included the crown of thorns and many ancient manuscripts. The high alter seems to be OK with the statue of the Pieta (1700's) by Nicolas Coustou is intact. However the main alter is covered with stone and burnt wood debris from the steeple falling through the stone roof. It was made in the 1980's of a solid block of stone surrounded by gilded bronze. I think the bronze was melted by the fire but the solid stone block may still be there. It is hard to tell with all the debris that has fallen on it. Some fire men rushed into the cathedral during the fire and saved many of the candle holders and candelabra and other religious instruments some of them made of gold. I saw some drone footage of the damage to the stone roof and a few of the vaults including the vault where the nave meets the transept in the center of the stone roof are gone. It is a miracle the stone walls are still standing. The 2 towers and the bells that are in them are fine. The bells were restored several years ago.
A fire broke out at Al-Marwani Prayer Room in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound yesterday, at the same time as the world watched Paris’ iconic Notre Dame Cathedral engulfed in flames.

Weird thing is that they already collected over 1.000.000.000 euro's for restauration, and when they have to help a country in need they are hardly willing to give anything. Of course the richest families are paying, and they get the refund from the tax, so the whole eu is paying for some stones and art, whether they like it or not.
