Is it appropriate for parents to read their kids/teenagers/college students text messages, diaries/journals, who are still living under their parents roofs or is that an invasion of their privacy?

Sometimes parents believe it is their responsibility to be sure their children are in a "safe place" in their lives.

Depends on what age they are. At 18, they are considered mature enough to leave and live on their own though not all do. I know when I was in college, if I thought I was being spied on, it wouldn't have went over good and would have most likely just put a permanent rift in the family.

True that at age 18 may be invasion whether they still live home, would have to be evaluated if the 18 year old was exhibiting unusual behavior for safety reason. Nowadays kids can use passwords and other means that other's can't crack. But the younger the kid is, parents often require their passwords for their phones, emails and social media accounts.

I’ve never been a parent so I’m no help. Communications were Pretty much private p. However, as long as I lived under my parents roof I lived by their rules. And then I was kicked out at 17.

I was never kicked out but their were certain rules I felt were extreme and was not willing to abide by. By choice, I left home at an early age, and thankfully I had a good head on my shoulders, never got in any trouble and made responsible choices/decisions and was quite successful.

handshake always good to hear a success story. I don't blame my parents for giving me the boot. I made too much noise riding on my ducati and triumph dirt bikes on the back acreage in early mornings to suite the neighbors back then. Never went back to my parents to live. Did ok regardless.

Thank you.

Same here, I never returned home either. I always felt my parents were extremely strict and and too controlling.

it's appropriate for parents to help educate their children.
for college age...i think that's an invasion of privacy.

for teenagers...it depends. i worked as a high school teacher, and the maturity level can be quite different for the same aged teenagers. if one is looking based on an observation that the teenager is at risk...then safety may trump an invasion of privacy.
but anyone reading anyone else's business on a witch hunt is not cool.

I agree merc....if you're checking outta concern maybe just skim to make sure all is cosier....there can be case of luring on the net too....after 16 I say no not at all....I agree education is key....I never let my kids go on anything other than msn with their friends to chat and sites they needed to research for school...I also explained to them why and told them never to give out personal info etc....I was real with them about the dangers of being on the net at that age....one of my friends was just telling me that a man she met for a date actually hacked into his 20 yr old sons phone so he could read his messages and the kid has no clue....that's just lack of boundaries and total disrespect......wave

While it's appropriate for parents to 'oversee' texting of their young children, at some point it should taper off. That is unless they don't show maturity for being allowed to have a phone.

Text messages can be deleted. If a kid knew his parents were reading his texts, he/she could easily delete them.

To be honest young children I would have so many blocks on their phone I would have little to worry about. Teenagers and college students, why of course it is an invasion of their privacy, and if I have a reason to be worried I will be in there invading. dunno My children are and will always be that my children. My whole job as their parent when they were younger was to raise them to be self sufficient in this world. To prepare them to be able to live on their own. Even at times when I knew what was bothering them, and also knew I had to sit back and let them fall. Sometimes that is the best learning lesson blues

My children are adults now and no thanks to me they have grown into wonderful beings. Raising amazing children of their own. Kids don't come with instructions. You just got to try and do what you think is right and hopefully enough of it will stay in them they will know right from wrong.

Since my daughter knows I am on this site I need to add this for her uh oh she is taking me to a theme park tomorrow so I don't know if she will read this or not. Just in case.
(Mama loves you and you know I am not going to lie to you. Did you doubt for one minute I wouldn't snoop if I was worried about you? And you are the best xoxo ) heart wings heart wings heart wings
