I recycle everything I can.
Here, we have recently banned using plastic bags that are used to package our groceries. Years ago, and still, have always taken my own bags to the store for whatever I need, amongst other ways to make my own small difference.
methuzelah: when I learned that USA doesn't have a real recycle program I stopped recycling.
we were sending our trash to China, they were, are recycling. China stopped receiving our trash
now our trash accumulating everywhere in warehouses. China stopped our trash after the high tariffs
Yes China stopped taking our trash. I recently heard on the news, how expensive it is to recycle. Trash needs to be sorted through before it can be recylcled.

Yes, my county came with new recycle trash cans but I'm not doing it. waste of time. and their new machines can't take plastic. crazy world.

We have had the trash cans for quite a while now. But it's hard to know what to recycle. For example, you can recycle paper but you must remove the staples. This is one reason why it's so expensive to recycle.

and plastic bags are stopping the machines. workers have to cleared those machines manually I think this is ridiculous and laughable

I mis-spoke, we have a proposal to ban the plastic bags, plastic straws and styrofoam cups. It's a tough subject but something needs to be done about it. I think it's very important.

I recently saw on social media that there was a whale who was found to have 80 pounds of plastic in his stomach. So sad!

We have been recycling cans for some time now, but only aluminium ones

Strange thing is: Most dutch people are forced to recycle by the law, but it's less expensive if the garbagemen do it for you at the place where they collect the trash. I live in a flatbuilding and we have one big container in front of the house, everybody throw in anything. And in most of the cities it's the same for people have no space for all the kliko's. In my area people with a garden have 4 of them, but there are villages where they have even 5.
i recently read about plastic bags vs paper bags and cloth bags. turns out, the fossil fueled industry of cutting down trees for paper bags costs more, and negatively impacts the planet more than using plastic bags. it suggested using plastic bags, ... but to reuse them. ie. use later for litter or garbage. reuse for toting. and it mentioned that for cloth bags to be as effective as using plastic bags, one would need to use the cloth bag 1100 times.
i want to add though, that from a different point of view...you won't find paper bag islands like the plastic islands, floating in the ocean.
i think focusing on a smaller footprint personally contributes to good stewardship of the land.
i used to have a much smaller footprint on the westcoast when i shopped at the markets, almost no waste, didn't buy paper towels, plastic wrap, or shop in big box stores, buy pre packaged food items, eat fast foods, or drive a lot. currently i am living in another province in a rural area which makes no waste shopping a bit challenging. but i still think i could be doing better.
jono7: grrrr.....corporations. i used to get very distressed that Nestle's was pretty much getting Canadian water for free (due to the lack of government regulation regarding the extraction of ground water) and then putting it into plastic and making a lot of money!
just an idea re corporations dependent on plastics...... stop buying their products ?
an average family can make a difference by reducing their personal footprint. becoming more discerning regarding one's personal footprint benefits self and others.
Oh I can't abide N*stle...once I see their name on something it goes right back on the shelf....
Yeh, every little helps for sure...but when I hear what big business is doing it can be soooo disheartening and demoralising...and makes what I do seem like such a tiny drop in a massive ocean..
