I had the diamonds, emeralds and ruby stones removed from my deceased wife's rings, including the engagement ring I gave her, and then had them mounted on studs so I can wear them on my left pierced ear. The diamond mounting looks great but i dislike the mountings for the other stones. They look like bath tubs.

Very inventive, and it means that you still keep her with you always. You must have really loved her... Change the settings on the ones you don't like, so that you get use out of them too...
I'm a metals guy. Gold is my weakness. I love the feel of it. I can't believe I can actually trade paper for actual gold! I love Eagles, Rands, Roos, Pandas, Sovereigns, Maples, Libertads, Francs. LOVE THEM.
Stones? Besides Rolling....Rubies and Emeralds. However, the ones I like are those that are perfect and pretty much out of my reach. The mystic Topaz (looks like a rainbow) is an attractive stone well within my budget. As of late turquoise American Indian jewelry is HOT! I've been slowly collecting antique Navaho & Zuni cuffs (bracelets).

As a former dealer of minerals....alas...diamonds are way too hyped. I far prefer the ranks of semi-precious stones....topaz, aquamarine, sapphire, ruby, emerald, morganite, tourmaline, well. I could add many dozens of minerals to this list - BUT - when you speak of mountings and such...arrrghhh, a "cutter!" One who thinks taking a creation from nature and carving it into a bauble for jewelry....my heart bleeds! :-)

The market died in the early eighties. China being an awesome exception after 1990. Ebay was fun for me for a while though. I have 1 APS and 1 GPS certificate on 2 world class rarities. Wish they were China .
Yes, diamonds burn. There are many substantiated insurance claims of diamonds being destroyed in fires. As far as I know, the bit about no ash remaining is theoretical. Being pure carbon, the combustion of diamond does produce CO2. But just how many absolutely pure diamonds are there? Any color in diamonds is produced by non-carbon impurities. In addition to the oxygen which takes up residence on the surface of a diamond (attaching itself almost automatically to the free molecular bonding sites), most diamonds are at least partially nitrogenated.
So, technically, if you have a non-nitrogenated, flawless, pure-white diamond, you can turn it into CO2 with the application of heat. But who would want to?
Boy, isn’t a CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics a handy thing to have around?

I have never come across a genuine person not loving Gemstones.
We all have our favourites.
Do you know of any good mountings of a combination of single and multiple Gemstones? Creations of your own, or your friends, or Jeweller..?
