Great question. I don't know if you, or others, have noticed, but frequently when meeting new people, often the question, "So, what do you do"? or similar comes up. I've noticed that quite a few people are reluctant to say, because it is common to have opinions formed because of a job, or career. It's human nature to do this, but it is inappropriate. I think a good response if you're getting tired of it would be, "I'm slacker trash living on food stamps and annuities my grandma left me".

Humans have done it throughout time.
Had an incident yesterday: a really BIG Black guy, supposed to be a professional.. treated me as if he thought, I was just some stupid, poor woman, White trash or something? As if I should be intimidated by him and as if I was at his mercy.

People are social creatures and many, if not all (I think exclusions are very rare), want to know where on the social ladder you are compared to them. Makes it easier for them to jump to conclusion.
Can't blame them: it's not as time consuming as being involved in conversation or such :)
To be immune for the normal, gut-level, knee-jerk reaction to first impression, which means dress, facial characteristics, status in society, job, public info regarding job/income/position of influence, job title, the car one drives, the label on your jacket, the logo on your bag....all these signals we are conditioned to read and acknowledge. It's a brand world, you bloody serfs, you are owned and commanded by the One Percent....tug your forelocks, and take a knee!

Another thing.. .in France..they usually judge you by your status..i.e. Education..
In Germany..by the clothes you wear and the car you drive..
In England...by your accent..
As for Spain..the dialect you speak but also the knowledge you have. As for the foreigners in Spain..Well...if they don't speak the language they are considered being some kind of alien from another planet
