For example I wouldn't like to see words abbreviated in a written conversation...
Otherwise a simple "Hello" is enough for a start...

Well, my native language is dutch, and most english I learned, I learned by listening to rock/popmusic and searching for the lyrics.
Of course I've had many english lessons at school too.
But sometimes i have to search for some words or translations. Google-translate isn't always helpful, but most of the time it is.
When I am in the UK, i might sometimes struggle for words, but the longer I'm there, the more easy it becomes.
A lot of words you don't use daily or regularly are easy to forget.
