Kentucky boy severely burned as boiling water poured on him in 'Hot Water Challenge' Billy Kobin, Louisville Courier Journal Published 7:41 a.m. ET July 26, 2019
An 11-year-old Kentucky boy suffered severe burns after a friend reportedly poured boiling water on him while he slept as part of the viral "Hot Water Challenge."
Billy Oliver, an 11-year-old from Clay County, was staying at a friend's house Tuesday when he decided to go to bed while the friend stayed up playing a video game, WYMT reported.
Oliver told WYMT he suddenly woke up about 2:30 a.m. to pain as his friend threw boiling water on him in a move inspired by the "Hot Water Challenge."
The dangerous challenge, which has hospitalized children around the country and even killed a girl, involves pouring hot water on someone or daring someone to drink boiling water through a straw.
Oliver was reportedly taken to a hospital in Manchester, Kentucky, before being transferred to the Burn Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
According to WYMT, doctors believe Oliver will not need skin grafts and could go home as early as Friday if his skin continues to show the ability to heal.
Oliver told WYMT "on a zero to ten scale how bad it hurt, it was a ten."
Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Clifton Jones told the Lexington Herald-Leader charges will be filed against those involved in the incident. The name of Oliver's friend will not be released as the friend is a minor.
