While I agree... I'll also add... just getting by for some families is too rampant in today's society.

Materialistic greed was always a thing since society started, its just that today, there is so much available to us, we go completely overboard and the more we get, the more we want and some will step over their own mother's grave just to have something the next door neighbor would be jealous of.

We pretend property is worth something around twice as much as it is so that property-owners and shareholders can live the life of riley. The youth exist to cater to this landed and inherited wealth with little prospect of owning the material things you do need - like the roof over your head. Any money they do have gets largely spent on toys and distractions, the things that do matter are beyond you because older people lived far beyond their means and are now forcing you to pay a price they're not worthy of.

They keep inventing things nobody needs but they just say it's fun to have it, buy it, and when you have it, you hardly use it.
A good example was Married with children where the family bought a computer and nobody used it, so finally Al Bundy takes a big hammer and destroys it.
