I will be having cataract surgery on my left eye the first week in October. Two weeks after that I will get the right eye done.
I'm worried and extremely nervous about this surgery. They can't give me general anesthesia (to put me to sleep) because they would have to intubate me (putting a tube down my throat to my lungs) so they will give me what is called Twilight Anesthesia. I've had that type of anesthesia before and I woke up both times in the middle of the surgery scared to death.
So, if anyone has had cataract surgery or you know someone who has had it I would appreciate hearing how it went for you.
Mine were done in 1985. Sodium pentathol was given to put me out completely while they deadened the optic nerve and it was then used to keep me sedated. Another anesthetic was injected. I was awake during my cataract procedures. Biggest concerns are monitored for pressure and infection.
Dont sweat it, just do what they tell you to do pre and post op.
Thank you Galrad and OLT. I'm a natural born worrier.
The care afterwards is a nightmare. I have three different kinds of eye drops. The first dose of one of the drops is at 7 a.m. Then at 7:05 a different drop and then at intervals of 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm and 10 pm.
This goes on for 30 days
I'm worried, how am I going to wash my hair and take a shower without getting my eye wet.
The cataracts are so bad that if I don't do the surgery on both eyes I will go blind.

Don't wash your hair in the shower, do it in the sink or have someone do it for you, keep the area dry and follow the steps they give you!! I'm sure you will have an eye patch or you can definately get them in your local pharmacy to keep the area clean (: Putting drops in is just pulling down the bottom layer of eyelashes toward your cheek and drop a drop in always clean the hands first

Irish ......I know about pulling the bottom lid down. It's watching the clock for five minutes to pass before I can do a different drop. The whole thing is constantly putting drops in my eyes.
When I go to bed I have to sleep at a 45 degree angle and wear an eye patch. I normally toss and turn all night long. I have to be aware not to do that so I won't be getting too much sleep.
During the day I have to wear special sunglasses even in my house because I have a lot of windows that get the bright sun.
Oh geez, all this complaining is annoying me. Where is the slap me emote to knock me out of this
EXRED ........Interesting you say that. When I spoke to the surgeon I made it clear to him how paranoid I am. I heard him tell the nurse to write in my chart.....give her extra anesthesia
I had my cataracts done I was not put out was awake all the time. when I went in to get the one eye done they gave me a bunch of eye drops before and a mild valium pill. then I was brought to a room I believe was a laser machine. then I went to where they put your new lens in. I was awake the whole time. you do get drops you have to use after with a schedule when to apply the drops. then I had to start all over for the other eye.

Hello Stringman.......I have to start with drops three days BEFORE the surgery I asked my doctor about laser surgery and he said I have a very bad astigmatism that laser surgery can't correct so I have to go with the scalpel. I could get the astigmatism corrected but my insurance won't cover the cost of $1,500 for each eye. The insurance company says that astigmatism can be corrected with eyeglasses. That sucks that I'll still have to wear eyeglasses. Cataract surgery is only to keep me from going blind. The first surgery is Oct. 7th. Hopefully by the time Oct. 21st comes around for the other eye I'll have a better idea how to handle it.
I'm drifting toward cataract surgery but my doctor says I'm not there yet. When I do have it done I was thinking of getting my nearsightedness corrected. Since they do one eye at a time, what do I do, take one lens out of my glasses that I won't need? Boy will I get stares.
William5302: hope not lazer se exacturgery..prefered by my wife and friends, not sure exact name, but put in lenses instead more permerent fix than lazer
Hello William......I'm not getting laser surgery because I have a very bad astigmatism and laser doesn't work for that. The surgeon will be using a scalpel to transplant a new lens. I've been wondering if the "new lens" is from a cadavar.
yes I know a man who had done last year both eyes right eye was almost blind and left not much better he had one done todat and other after I think six weeks are now perfect and he can see clearly again a really good outcome they doe while he was awake

Well that's good news. I wonder how bad his astigmatism was. I will still have to wear eyeglasses because my stig is very bad. They could correct it but my insurance won't pay for it so it would cost me $3,000 for both eyes I can't afford that. The purpose of the surgery is to keep me from going blind which is more important than worrying about wearing eyeglasses. I wonder if men still make passes at girls who wear glasses.
bad well he could not see clock on wall that's about 12 inches a nd he was driving aroung here when really he should not be on rd was almost blind got done in our system had to wait a while .but don't be nervous is a great thing

I am watching/reading this thread with a lot of interest, as the last time I had my eyes checked the optometrist told me that eventually I will need laser surgery, how long? they were not sure... just depends on how quickly the cataracts grow... My mother also had laser surgery, due to cataracts, in her 70's and she didn't need to wear glasses at all after that...

Hello Chambella......If you have already been told that you will need surgery for cataracts my guess is that you will be doing it within the next couple years. The first time an optometrist told me that he could see cataracts was six years ago. Apparently what was already showing got bad fast. My suggestion is that you see a different doctor to compare notes.
