Spellcheck ( Archived) (19)

Most of us use spellcheck, they say that it makes us lazier and spell worst. I challenge that.

There are many words that I used to spell wrong but because I used spellcheck and saw the correction, I eventually corrected my spelling and now spell a lot of those words right. Before spellcheck, the only way to find out the spelling was to ask someone who was good at spelling or check the dictionary, both most people wouldn't bother to do and then there are words that you didn't even know you were spelling wrong so how can you correct what you did not even know?

My spelling today is much better because of spellcheck than it was without. I think spellcheck makes us better speller's (provided you take the time to absorb the correction in your mind).

Hi Track...
The trouble with spell check is that sometimes it only gives you options and it's up to you to choose the right word?

Here in your text..for example you wrote "it makes us better speller's" ...
When it should be "spellers"...with no apostrophe!

Btw...some are looking for you on the blogs ???

Spellcheck can make you lazy if you already know how to spell the words. You can just lazily type a close version of the word, rather than taking the trouble to spell it properly, knowing that the corrected word will show up.

But I agree that you learning the correct spelling of a word due to seeing it on spellcheck is a good thing thumbs up

Ensuring that you have the correct English version for your country is important too.

Plus spellcheck doesn't correct grammar which I think is relevant to the 'spellings' not 'spelling's' thing confused

Don't start me on misplaced apostrophes mumbling laugh

kornbluth: Me too, and I'm good at American lingo. That is, U.S.-American, not Canadian-American lingo. Chicago style or NY Times? I before E except after C, or is it the other way round? Why doesn't spell-check recognize "storey" with an E as a floor of a building? Spelling in English is a Tower of Babel. But right or wrong, savory or not, we do need to aim for some standards, and spell-check is at least an effort.
We can't rely on spellcheck. As you say it is not fool-proof.

It is really by reading that we learn to write properly.

I appreciate it since my award winning spelling bee champion status has been relegated to about a grade 6 spelling ability due to my 2 second memory...it helps when it looks like I actually still know how to spell....roll eyes
