Vegemite - is a thick, black Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It was developed by Cyril Callister in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922. The Vegemite brand was owned by Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods Inc.) until January 2017, when it was acquired by the Australian Bega Cheese group in a US$460,000,000 (equivalent to about $470,000,000 in 2018) agreement for full Australian ownership after Bega would buy most of Mondelez International's Australia and New Zealand grocery and cheese business.

Vegemite is salty, slightly bitter, malty, and rich in glutamates – giving it an umami flavour similar to beef bouillon. It is vegan, kosher, and HALAL

Both Vegemite and Marmite are nice alternatives as a spread on toast. Many are fearful of the salt content in everything....but if you look at nature you'll see that many animals find sources of it in their environment as it's a necessary part of their healthy diet. I love it the same way I love anchovies. Australian women are nice to wake up to also. Cheeky? teddybear

Mercedes_00: What is Bovril?
Seems similar, you can make a drink from it too..
Bovril is the trademarked name of a thick and salty meat extract paste similar to a yeast extract, developed in the 1870s by John Lawson Johnston. It is sold in a distinctive, bulbous jar, and also as cubes and granules. Bovril is owned and distributed by Unilever UK.

"Vegemite is an excellent source of B vitamins. In fact, one teaspoon provides half an adult's daily requirements for folate and thiamine," she said. "The spread is low in energy, with one teaspoon providing less than 50 kilojoules and containing 1.5 grams of protein, no fat and no added sugar."

Vegemite is one of several yeast extract spreads sold in Australia. It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives.

Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe. Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter and all blood is drained from the carcass.1

Yeah people do that..I only took to vegemite the last couple of years as to me a spread on a sandwich isn't a sandwich..I like big fat sandwiches with yummy fillings...If I have an evening class at the gym when I arrive home I will make a slice of toast with a little scraping of vegemite & brie cheese as a boost and that is quite nice.
