Dollar Stores have always been around but lately there is a new trend for them to be popping up more.
They aren't a supermarket but they do have canned food, junk food, lots of paper and plastic items, glassware, and a section for party supplies or whatever holiday is coming up.
I shop in the Dollar Tree for dish detergent and bleach because nothing costs more than a dollar.
In Dollar General and Family Dollar things cost more than a dollar but nowhere near what it would cost in a supermarket.
The man in the video blames Dollar stores for the obesity problem in the United States. In the area where I live there are two Dollar General stores and two Dollar Tree. Yes there are people who are overweight but not obese. Junk food is cheaper in Dollar stores so people are more apt to load up on it.
You still have to go to a supermarket for meat and fresh vegetables. I've never been to a Dollar General store that has a frozen food section as shown in the video.
The man in the video also thinks it isn't fair competition because small mom and pop stores are going out of business.
What do you think? Is it fair competition or is the Dollar franchise just being greedy?
There are a few staples I'll buy from Dollar tree. One: Scented kitchen garbage bags. 28 (almost a month's worth) for $1. Yes they are cheap and won't hold a piano but what the heck, you're going to throw them away anyways. Why buy kitchen garbage bags anywhere else for $4+ ? Two: Sandwich bags and storage bags. $1 for a box each, Can't beat that price. Three: Tin foil. 40 ft for $1. Sold! Four: Soaps. Bath soaps (3 for a $1) and dispensing liquid antibacterial soap for the kitchen. 5.) Paper products. Writing paper, wrapping paper, notebooks, poster paper, birthday cards. 6.) Specials. Recently our Dollar Tree brought in a load of Cheerios that sell regularly for $4 at supermarkets and I filled my cart up with boxes of Cheerios. Cereal has a short shelf life at my house.
In the little town I grew up in NYS there is no more supermarket but there is a Dollar General and a CVS. CVS is very expensive and you need a CVS card to get sales prices. The Dollar General is a god send for the poor people that live in that town.
The town I now live in Florida has 2 Dollar Trees and several Dollar Generals and a couple of Family Dollars which I think was bought out by Dollar Tree recently. I buy my stereo earbuds for the computer at Dollar Tree where everything is a dollar or 2 for a dollar. My Father used to joke while waiting for the register at Dollar Tree yelling "Price check on isle 3!!!"
There was about 3 years where if it wasn't for a store like dollar tree (the 99cent store) I would have had to go without regular meals. During that time after my rent, water & electricity was paid I had between $250 & $350 leftover at the end of the month to feed 2 people pay auto insurance and put gas in the truck. And in California it's hard to find very many items at the grocery store that cost less then $3. So if that was they only place I could buy food I would have probably lost quite a bit of weight. The 99cent store I shopped at stocked grocery item's like produce and bakery items plus far more canned goods then dollar tree. I really wish there was a 99cent store near me is South Carolina.

Did you do a Google search? I live in North Carolina and they're all over the place.

Oh man I am sooooo gonna use that.
FYI: Dollar Tree bought out Dollar General.
On July 28, 2014, Dollar Tree announced that it would buy Family Dollar for $8.5 billion. The sale delivered a windfall to the company's biggest shareholder Carl Icahn, who acquired his 9.4 percent stake in June 2014.
They suit the decline of the high street and middle class. Discount stores have lost the image that you’d only go there if you were a pig in a western worlds newfound sense of resourcefulness.
Actually, I have a Newer, Dollar General is now the closest store, I do buy thing from there, I even buy motor oil there for my tractor, Cheaper than anywhere else.
They are taking business from other places, But many other places are over charging, so let it be...I will shop for what I can at dollar general...
Another good choice for Meats and Vegetables, and many other items, is Aldi, and in Germany it is called Lidl..... There is big savings there...as you box up your own food, and it is in cases, not all placed on the shelves, saving the consumer from paying extra stocking and bagging fees, so they can sell cheaper, because it takes less Employees.

I have an Aldi about two miles from me and I had one in New Jersey. I didn't like the store. Clerks were very unfriendly and the atmosphere made me feel like I was shopping in a flea market. Flea markets are fun but not for frozen food.

I agree a lot of their meats are Frozen, and I don't go there often, I have never had anyone unfriendly... But they can be anywhere... They built another one closer to me, but I have never been to the new one... I do agree, it can be somewhat like a Flea market...You never know what you may find
