Knowing how to read body language is a real skill that can help you understand
what people are NOT saying. In the dating game, this can be especially useful.
Meeting a date for the first time is an opportunity to assess the person opposite
and get an impression of their character.

How good are you at reading body language?

Yes it's true, and I'm very good at it.
I had to learn it as a part of my teacher training and psychology studies.

It maybe is easier when from same country and culture but crossing the great divide it becomes harder.

I have always found I may have made my mind up about someone but hey they change frustrated before my eyes

so maybe I am not a good judge. sad flower

It is one of those things to me that I feel that I am fairly good at, and just when I think I do, I usually get a shocking surprise laugh

Especially with the different Cultures...cheers

I don't even need to see you in person...
I can make a proper characteristic of you just by looking at your picture...
I never failed to be at least 90% correct...

Because I've been told.
We were tested on this too.

But..as Red just said.. it's more difficult when dealing with other cultures.
That's when misinterpretaions occur.sigh

A typical example: emoticons.
They are often misinterpreted.
A funny face may mean you're happy and laughing, but maybe insulting to someone else? dunno

Varying degrees - sometimes I have been spot on, in other cases I have gotten it wrong. Majority of cases I'm getting it right.

I don't have one bit of a poker face (and not much patience) myself. mumbling

I don't know whether I'm good or not at reading body language, as it never been formally tested. I don't know though, why I would need it: dating isn't a game for me.

Do you read your counterterpart's reaction and do what? Adjust? Will you continue to guess the unsaid adjust to other people for the rest of your life?

If they don't like something in my behavior, but transmit it only with body language, whithout saying it, just pretending that everything is fine and then disappear without a trace despite stating otherwise at farewell... Yes, it's social skill and all that, but at the end of the day we are not a good match after all.

All good points. I think the skill of reading body language is not per se being able to interrogate spies or win at poker. It's useful in that it shifts the focus onto one's conversation partner. Being able to read the other person, being attentive and being able to listen well are great skills to have.

I don't consciously read body language.
If I do it at all, it is on a subconscious level.

Believe me, NONE of my dates are ever non-verbal.

After half an hour, I'm sure some of my dates wish they were...
