On the passing of one of Britain's eminent conservative philosophers, here Sir Roger Scruton's most well-known argument for conservative values in life and art - the idea that beauty as a value and a constant, is essential to human life.

Thank you Only! applause

So many layers of beautiful in that argument for beauty. Not plastic soulless beauty but the kind of beauty that feeds the soul and our inner divinity. That's why it's essential to human life.
Not sure I agree with the expression 'conservative values' to describe Sir Roger Scruton's phylosophy. Conservative has connotations of 'set bounderies' whereas his phylosiphy is about expension beyond the 'human' into the divinity of everything, some modern art, most architecture and some modern music with its violent content, are precisely bound within the 'limits of human condition and perception' lacking the divine dimension with its inherent beauty that touches people in spite of themselves.

Many of the old buildings display shapes and form and ancient knowledge using sacred geometry and astrology. These same shapes and forms can be observed in nature for example. It's like a strand that connects the devine 'element' between everything 'natural' on our planet imbuying it with its own divine beauty heart beating

Curious, did you get riz’s permission to post this British content in the international forum? He was teaching American English in China. I don’t know where he is today.

may he r.i.p.

i believe that beauty is essential to well being and happiness . i love beauty in all its forms. from a falling leaf to a petal to stars in the sky, and millions more besides. the beauty side of nature itself is so wonderful and generally free . it lifts my spirits and fills me with a certain special kind of energy that only beautiful things can. it can gladden my heart unexpectedly, just in a moments notice at a glance. i heard some sounds today behind me and when looked around it was 3 swans flying along in a kind of formation , heading towards a river ahead . im still feeling good about that sight . its amazing what the energy of beauty can do and the sense of joy it can arouse in a person . i think it certainly serves as a positive boost to life in those who are affected by its powers, and receive its wonderful effects. of course its also in the eye of the beholder . i do believe that beauty can help cure folk of illness and speed up recovery. its a wonderfull n powerful gift to all.
