Once upon a time it use to be that Italy was the best place to live and that the people live the longest despite what is supposedly unhealthy drinking quantities of vino...and eating rich foods and hanging with their loved ones....now that is not possible any longer am not surprised so many Italians are succombing to the illness without all of that interaction they thrive on it...
With a nominal GDP of $2.07 trillion, Italy is the world’s eighth-largest economy. Its economy is expected to expand to $2.26 trillion by 2023. In terms of GDP (PPP), its economy is worth $2.40 trillion and it has a per capita GDP of $34,260.34. Italy—a prominent member of the eurozone—has been facing deep political and economic chaos. Its unemployment rate continues to be in double-digits, while its public debt remains sticky at around 132% of GDP.
On the positive side, exports and business investment are driving economic recovery. The economy clocked 0.9% and 1.5% in 2016 and 2017, respectively. It is projected to edge down to 1.2% in 2018 and 1.0% in 2019."

Loneliness is a killer, but not like this.
What's more telling is that, old or not, Italy is very healthy for a first world country it has but a trace of the luxury diseases found in most rich countries(particularly the rich countries that won the second world war, much of the English-speaking world is degenerated on the spoils of war). What happens with corona in a land of childhood obesity is that the young die as though they were old and frail.
I mean hopefully this nasty unglamorous illness would kick fat acceptance in the pants. You wouldn't have guessed that collapse and disaster would be overwhelming the nation because of all the burgers but you should have done. Hopefully now we would clamp down on overeating like we clamped down on smoking, and France would clamp down on smoking like it clamps down on bad food.
Maybe the lockdown would curb obesity, not just because of rationing and shortages but because of equality. Eating too much is a product of someone else having a better car or a more attractive wife, it's a comfort eating but the pain is envy pain: to stuff ones face through the tears of seeing someone more successful: Don't get even, get eating.
And I would bet that following this period of lifesaving and going without there will come a period of feeding the hungry and the suffering of the world. Society gets into this in a big way. It's a sin how much we love food.
