rohaan: Hi everyone. I’m going to weigh in my beliefs of “What Killed Marriage”. Many of us boomers saw terribly unhappy marriages, often ending in bitter divorce. We don’t want that for ourselves. Life is just too short. Also, way too many completely unfair laws that usually screw (but not always) the man. Too many to list here, but those who pay attention and do their homework know that this is far too often true. Then, tax laws and policies that cripple finances. Case in point~~I have friends who are both completely dependent on social security and other benefits. They are very careful, very faith~oriented Bible believing, etc...and though their combined incomes are enough, it is “just enough”. If they marry, current law will cause the lesser recipient to lose that full income, plus benefits totaling half of the entire income. This man and woman are deeply in love, believe totally in marriage, but absolutely cannot. It would throw them under the bus. I am all for their staying together in a privately agreed upon union, in fact, I don’t believe the government should be involved in what I see as a private matter!

Sorry so long, guys, but felt like giving my take....
Thanks for your valuable contributionhandshake thumbs up

curious...
common law in the states?
here, in canada, if two folks live together for more than 2 years...they are automatically considered common-law married, and taxes must be combined and filed together...and yes....they both get thrown under the bus. there are some differences between the provinces, but overall it is the same outcomes. one big difference is with common-law marriage there is no matrimonial house/home and folks get to leave with what they brought into the union. but as far as government help, or pensions (government and private) etal...common law folks are dealt with the same as married folks. where this is helpful, is if one of the partners has a great medical plan, they can include their spouse.

i hear all the time, how the courts are unfair to men. but i have wondered...is it about being a man, or is it about who had/has the higher income? i know several women who married men who made less income...and for the few that divorced, it was the woman who had to pay the alimony and child support for part time parenting by the father.

i'm not saying things are fair. expecting fairness is like believing in fairy tales. life isn't always fair, and we are not equal either. best course of action me thinks...is to just deal the best one can, from a place of compassion, with whatever comes up.
