It’s good for the community to be brought together in a bonding session built from our own foolishness. Equals peoples. And of course you’ll have to go that step further to admit a drinking problem with a bloke sitting next you. One thing worse than drinking is drinking alone.

a pub is a place for socializing.
A few pubs in the Netherlands went bankrupt during the lockdown. But there are area's in cities where there are very much pubs in a small area, some of them are empty most of the time. It's a way to get rid of criminal money. And in many pubs there's illegal harddrugs dealing, mostly coke.
So, if in the big cities pubs disappear, I don't care, if it is in a small village, it's different, often there's one pub for the whole village. In my village the pubs organize a yearly fishing match, a pub quiz, condoleances when someone dies, there are billiardsclubs 4 evenings a week and when there's formule1 racing or footballmatches they have a big screen where people come to look. Also often card evenings like poker etc.
For a village a pub is more than a social place to meet with others.

I remember when pubs in England had very strict rules as to when they could open. During the week from 2 pm to 5pm, close at 1030pm except Friday and Saturday it was 11 pm. Sunday close at 3pm to 7pm, close at 10.30. In parts of Wales pub were not allowed to open all day. Most counties in Wales were know as wet or dry on a Sunday. The more forward councils, especially in the tourist ares change to 'wet' sooner than others.
I remember when country stores had chairs and guys sitting drinking coffee. Barber shops with the guys hanging just to chat. Taverns used to be where neighbors and families got together. Booze was not the main draw. Now it is bars filled with young trying to get drunk as fast as they can. Or crowds all watching 6 TVs and not talking. I fail to understand why humans are so attached to booze. I was asked once, since I don't drink, how can I have fun. If I need being drunk as an excuse maybe shouldn't be doing that at all. Used to drink some. Now I can get the same dizzy nausea just getting up too fast in the morning. Or catch a cold and feel the same. And I thought drinking was fun?
