charlala: I am 2 tall 2 carry so think that wud be equally hazardous. During lockdown the life expectancy in my area actually shot up due to just me remaining indoors
I would suggest not wearing a mask....cause it will be bad for both your health and mental healthwink Don't be afraid and try to avoid main scream mediawink

jac_the_gripper: It took me ages to psyche myself up to my 10K today. It was leisurely and low resistance, but at least I did it.

I don't want to lose the enjoyment of doing this. Everything feels like hard work at the moment and I need to feel positive about regaining my health and fitness.
Hey Jax, been following your comments on the use your exercycle.. i did have an exercycle but found it very boring and i was sitting on the seat all the time, started mountain biking about 6 weeks ago and it so much better than a exercycle..
Finding good tracks with different obstacles really makes riding better, obstacles like staircases help you get off the seat and stand on your petals.. there's a lot to learn about riding tracks but its super cool once you pick it up, I'm not fit by a country mile and still push my bike up most hills laugh

Tulefell: How can one burn himself out sitting in a boat?
It can be done if you do it a lot, plus a boat is a money pit, especially if you fish and ski.. I may feel the need for it again someday.. grin

@Butcher...

I have a drama, or documentary on while I cycle to keep me occupied. 10K on low resistance only takes 20 minutes anyway.

I'm more of a mountain walker than biker, but whilst I have plenty of mountains to explore locally (I moved here just before lockdown), it's more of a winter thing for me. I can sunburn on a rainy day in a forest. laugh

Also, if I go exploring, I prefer not to go on my own in case I get lost, or fall off the mountain. We still have restrictions here, so the exercise bike is an adaptation to my circumstances.

I planned to do 1K at a time today just so I could pat myself on the back for doing something.

It turns out that I just had a motivational block. Once I started I did 10K going up and down through the resistance levels and including some aerobic spurts.

I watch a 60 minutes Australia report from a R.E.D. zone covid ward. All the staff were working flat out wearing loads of hot, sweaty plastic PPE for their 12 hour shifts.

The cross-section of patients in the report included a heavily pregnant woman whose baby was still healthy, a foreign student who rapidly took a turn for the worse after a clear chest X-ray and who recovered so far away from her family, a young frontline nurse who contracted the disease and described previously holding a phone for a dying covid patient while he and his daughter said their final farewells, a young woman with an addiction who wanted to discharge herself back into the community and a representation of the daily losses.

I was affected by the poignant words of one young doctor who said, "We cannot keep doing this a third and fourth time" referring to the potential for repeated waves.

Socially distance, wear a mask, wash your hands. It's all we've got and all we can do to protect our frontline workers and each other.

It's such a small ask.

Hey Jax, i started out doing 10 minute stints on my bike and that was killing me to start with.. kept it at 10 minutes for about 2 weeks riding 3 to 6 times a day, now i can easily do 20 to 30 minute rides..
Yep i get the motivational block to but once i start riding i will keep going the whole day, first day back on the bike today because the weather has been crap and busy with other projects..

Read the other day:
“August 2014 she sank a tug at Esbjerg, Denmark…”
“…June 2015, she rammed the two Icelandic Coastguard patrol ships…”
“...June same year she ran aground at…”

Sure, it costs a lot, but is totally exiting. I do understand the sentiment. The most peculiar thing, though, is that it's reported as if she did it herself completely on her own :D

But being the last of the species, she might enjoy a liberty or two. Wouldn't you say? I would. Pity, thought, she's the last.

Nonetheless, another advantage* with a kayak is that it fits on the roof of your car. There's also a picture on FB with a kayak laying horizontally on the back seat and the back doors wide open (the car is on the road doing fine). Nothing I'm personally'd recommend, but it works and here we are.

*There is no evidence of a kayak sinking a tug or ramming coast guards or such. (Can get aground, though, sorry.)

I did an 11 hour shift with my four grandchildren yesterday. stuck

What exercise bike? talk to hand

laugh

For most of my life fitness has been somewhat effortless. I'm finding having to work within the limitations of age and convalescence extraordinarily frustrating. I'm going to think about breaking things down into smaller stints throughout the day.

Let me know how your ride went. wave

Tulefell: Paddling kayak:

* whole body physical exercise, when you paddle against wind / current
* whole body massage, when you drift with wind / current
* meditative, as any repetitive activity
* aesthetic pleasure from being in harmony with nature

I don't know any other activity, that gives you so many benefits both for mind and body in one stroke :)
Hey Tulefell, i am still looking at buying a kayak.. its' still a bit cold here to be out on the ocean in a kayak, but i should still look at buying one now because the prices may rise once the weather starts to warm up..
