I won't forget... 19 years ago today, I was working at the Air Force Academy, I was cleaning the press box, getting it ready for the next event. My boss called me on my radio, and told me to turn on the TV... 30 minutes later, he called us all into the office... Then, we were told to go home, the base was closing...

9-11-1953 is my ex's birthday, it's the only birthday card I send out all year...

I'll never forget... sad flower

I went up the Twin Towers a couple of years before when I was in New York. An amazing building with the glass floor at the look out on the top floor by the Windows of the World restaurant.

On the day it happened I was at home babysitting my grand daughter and thought a disaster movie was starting on the TV until I saw the red LIVE in the corner of the T.V.

Sad day for the World.sad flower

I would just like to point out that the Peace Memorial noted is not located in Gander. It is located in the town of Appleton, about 26kms West of Gander. In 2001, the town had a population of approximately 600-700 ppl. The 9/11 organizations, in recent years, have sent 2 pieces of the WTC to Central Newfoundland - 1 for Gander, 1 for Appleton.
Today, there was a service in Appleton to always remember.

I want to thank the General for posting a beautiful video of Gander. I had never heard of Gander and what they did for so many people until now.

Special thanks goes to Taralyn who is from Gander the town that came to the rescue of so many people on Sept. 11th.

CS is lucky to have Taralyn in the CS community. A beautiful person of integrity and kindness.

Kindness doesn't cost a penny. We are all the same under the skin. The only things that separate us from one another are opinions and prejudices; something that can be worked out.
Thank you for your words.

Had to resurrect myself for a moment to make a comment. I would have done so to create a thread, but I see there's no need. Anyway...

Living and working about an hour's drive away from Manhattan here's what comes to mind.

Several of my students lost loved ones that day. I was in the teacher's lounge on a break period for both strikes. We all thought the first one was some sort of tragic pilot error. After the second one everything changed. Teaching the subsequent classes that day was a surreal experience. Breaking the news to students who were going about their normal day is something I cannot forget.

However, the thing that sticks most in my memory was seeing the smoke from 55 miles away for DAYS afterwards. That day had a direct impact on my life that resonates until today.

One last thought. I wish the unity that happened in the aftermath could somehow resurface. Does there need to be another unspeakable horror to make that happen?

I was driving my son to school and heard over the radio that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. At the time, they thought it was a small plane and not a commercial airliner. When I got home, I turned on the news, just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower. I knew then, it was done deliberately.

I agree with Cranky, that I was proud of the unity of the country. We sold out of flags because so many people were buying them.

I can't remember any time in my lifetime..that we are as divided as we are now.

I too, hope it does not take another tragedy...to unite us again.

Guess it was a lesson to the arab people that they will loose much more people if they ever try it again.
Hope they learned their lesson.
