Problem with California. Humans. Nature uses fires to renew land. Redwood seeds wont sprout until they have been heated in a fire. Small trees get smothered in dense brush. But, humans fear fire. Rightly so..I do. But, they love to build in wild areas. Like forests back in in mountains. And suppress fires. Then they plant stuff not adapted to the climate of Cali. Suck down water sources to water crops.
Now those forests have been building detritus for decades. Forest floors are buried in brush, leaves, needles, dead trees until mega thick of combustibles. Lightening sparks the natural fire. Because man has altered things, the fires are now too big to suppress. Paybacks are a b8888.
My township beat the rush for the Smart Growth plans the state was going to do. I am back off the road as are many farms. I know of 2 city folk who built new houses dead center in pine plantations. To reach their house, you have to drive up a long drive through pines. In case of fire..they are toast! So township new rules are all new houses must be built only so many feet from the county road. They see the risk to houses and to firemen with houses way back in through woods.

By the way, we are at the end of the last mini ice age. I for one, am happy!!
