I enrolled in an online medical terminology course 3 weeks ago. You don't retain information or stay as interested at 49 as you did in your 20's. I have been dealing with reading/writing/using examples of to make things a little more enjoyable and help bring things to mind, etc. My problem is within 30 mins of firing up the course site - I'm yawning, my eyelids are getting heavy and I doze off sitting at the table. What do I do to counteract this??

Hey! Well done for enrolling on a new course!!
Research what minerals help brain focus and function and take supplements ...
Some foods like gluten or dairy or carbohydrates can create brain fog for people ... observe if that happens to you...
Lack of oxygen can make you feel sleepy. Is the space where you sit down to work well aired and oxygenated by having door/windows open and letting fresh air in?
Do you get enough sleep. Sometimes we feel sleepy because we're tired from lack of sleep ...
May be munch on some diced fresh fruit while concentrating... it's a natural sugar boost!!
One other thing 3 years ago my friends daughter fiddled around with a couple of different classes in the medical field and she described what you have during those times with both classes..Her third attempt at a different class in the medical field kept her awake it was more interesting..She graduates this year.
Although this might sound funny, when I had to be tested for updated material doing studying online I first did a Vitamin test to see what I was low in and the increases in B-complex helped, along with exercising between breaks, shutting off the phone, sleeping a bit if needed, working in a quiet area and changing the routine as much as possible. Energy drinks probably won't help during COVID19... I ate cherries, probiotics, or good nut bars with minimal sugars.
----Music will be distracting especially when you are trying to concentrate. Turn tv and music off. ----Stop munching on carbs whether complex or simplex. ----No cereal for breakfast, eggs or some other form of protein. Beef is a good source of iron. ----Don't study too long. ----When you are stuck on something don't continue to try to force it into your brain. Get away from it.
If you aren't enjoying the course then it's not the right one for you. It's just like finding the right man. Once you find him you can't wait to see him again. Same thing for your online course.

Maybe you can benefit from using cpap or maybe you could just use a little pickle tickle.

Actually SA it has been proven by scientific research that certain types of music (classical that have around 60-70 BPM) induces a state of relaxation where the mind is calm but alert. Your imagination is stimulated and concentration heightened.
I learned this during a training course at the Institute for Language research and training in Switzerland. The course they design always include particular background music being played while studying.

Thanks everyone, will most definately try the suggestions out and see what works. Sleep would probably help but I haven't slept more than 3 or 4 hrs/night in the past 5yrs. And, Track... I've been keeping the local Timmies in business and I've switched from decaf to fully loaded and no different. Anatomy would be so much fun with a human male specimen.......
