Aglaea: This is exactly the problem!

Discussions are about IDEAS, not about people. Old-fashioned forums were anonymous and people used nicknames and avatars. It didn't matter who they were. The ideas they discussed mattered.

That's the reason why - in the past - people could have - for example - a heated political discussion. You read them and think that they would kill each other there. And then - the same participants would meet on a discussion about a new film (for example) and - they agreed there. They didn't drag their political disagreement on the thread about the film. If they had different political opinions, that didn't mean that they had to disagree about everything. And - in the end - those same people would end on some chatting thread and had fun together.

But, that is lost.

Nowadays people simply cannot make the distinction between an opinion and a person, neither when they themselves are concerned nor when others are concerned. They are too attached to their opinions and believe that they define them, as well as others. That's why they react so aggressively when someone challenges their beliefs, tend to call other people all sorts of names, place themselves and others in boxes and get more and more stuck. Instead of always growing, always learning, they are proud that they haven't changed their opinion for 20 years. Rigidity became a sort of virtue.

Old-school discussing is dead. This new way of discussing is more a fight between drunkards in a tavern or gossiping sellers on a market than a real discussion. It's some silly: "You said... You are...".

It's like that everywhere. If you stay on one place for a while - they will drag you into it. It's simply not possible to avoid, because such people dominate discussion boards nowadays. Some participants almost wait for you to say something they can later twist and use against you somewhere else. It's very toxic environment.

Unless you like to fight - it's better to avoid all serious discussions. And I plan to follow my own advice and finish this discussion with discussion about discussing.

From now on - just funny threads and chit-chat!
You are one smart cookie Aglaea.

The art of a discussion without the need for mud slinging is indeed missing on Forums. Why people feel the need to attempt to humiliate other posters is beyond me. Is it a lack of confidence on their own part that they constantly bear bait? If you challenge them even in a friendly or humorous manner they call you a troll or a stalker or in my case an "old grannie".lol

Such a disruptive influence has killed any attempt at polite conversation. My life is not on line, this is just a place I like to come to for contact with the many pals I have made over the years and to interact hopefully with like minded people and have a laugh.. Sad to say people are leaving the site due to braggarts and bullies who feel the need to insult other posters.sigh

The more cognitively challenged we are, the more we rely upon stereotyping.

In a research experiment, subjects were asked questions and given multiple choice answers. Some answers involved more stereotyping than others. In one variable, subjects were asked to carry out arithmetical tasks whilst reading and answering the questions. These cognitively challenged subjects were more likely to choose stereotypical answers.

This phenomenon has a function. In emergency situations we have to make quick decisions in order to survive, so we'll use the quickest route to decision making.

The thing about the internet is that we are bombarded with information: our perception and cognitive processing is challenged.

It's perhaps no surprise if organising people in boxes, or through stereotyping has become more prevalent, if it's a means of surviving stimulation overload.

Before people make comments regarding politics, medicine, law, science, etc., I think you should at least have some basic knowledge of the subject or topic... yet there lies the problem. A large majority of members on CS like almost all other sites have absolutely no idea of what they're talking about and why HATE usually develops once you start posting lies, misinformation, or ignorant remarks that create disunity. Some just troll for fun and have no purpose.

I would venture a guess and I'm being generous, only 5% of posters here would actually be able to debate in a university type setting or a more serious environment... the need to appear intelligent is pretty visible in the threads and Blogs, and yet many would probably stutter when speaking or just stiffen up in a real-life situation. Still, I'm for free speech as without it there is no democracy and why it needs to be supported... to give everyone a chance to be heard and voice their opinions.

Like the individual who arrogantly claims to be in the top 10% of UK intelligencia being elite and if this is true obviously the island has some major problems and it doesn't really show in her approach. Once you separate right-left politics it gets hostile and why the left is so violent when presented with facts and truth. All I see is individuals trying to be smart when actually they're not and this phenomenon will probably go on forever.

I'm actually more concerned with corrupt sites like Twitter, Facebook, and other social sites who are shadowbanning and banning conservatives going against the Constitution strictly for their opinion while allowing terrorists from BLM and ANTIFA to remain online to spew their venom. I was messaging James Woods ( the brilliant actor ) who got banned for posting a JOKE and then I and many others got banned defending him strictly because the left fears being challenged or using logic. I never went back... it's clearly a communist entity and why they are before hearings to answer for their actions in limiting free speech while making profits supporting enemies against democracy.
