I use a 60Ah solar panel to keep my battery (car) topped up as it's been standing a bit recently, run in through the car lighter.

ali110: Do anybody on here having a solar system or Wind turbine at home ?
If you really want to know about solar panels, charge controllers/inverters and especially batteries search for a guy on utube named Will Prowes. He test a lot of that stuff and give the most unbiased reviews you will find.

I give up on solar. All I have are the solar motion lights. I also have a sun enclosure off the kitchen door with black soda cans hanging and floor. I am so socked in with trees and the bluffs it is useless. The earth has moved over my lifetime here so the sun in January and on barely shows over the bluffs. I can't even get a dish for TV.
Neighbor put up a turbine long ago. Fix or repair every few month. Drove close neighbors batty with the whoop whoop whoop and flickering. He had 25K into it plus the repairs. Always some part breaking. He finally had it and sold it off as a losing proposition.
I can't see the cost even though my hill is super windy. It is up to companies, not the poor slobs.
I even have gone into battery lights cause can count on them more.doh

ali110: good post Butcher bro , batteries here don't last for long time just 1.5 to max 2 years , do u have any idea of long lasting batteries for solar setup ?
The weakest link in a solar system is the batteries. The old wet cell design is so inefficient it made solar an almost unviable proposition.
The good news is the new lifepo4 batteries are a lot better but still very pricey.

The joke is the green of electric cars. Where do people think the electricity comes from. Gas and coal fired power plants. Until power companies switch to solar and wind completely, all those car owners are doing is moving carbon sideways. Plus the pollution generated by making the batteries to power the cars. And then the disposal aspect. Penny wise and pound foolish. frustrated

Good info Bigjb, have you got a price for these new batteries ? i'm picking they will be pretty expensive to start off but will get cheaper as more of these new batteries are produced.. A good deep cycle battery here costs between 3 to $400, i don't think they are the new batteries that you speak of..

A good quality 100 amp hour lifep04 would run about $1000. And depending on how you cycle it you could get 5000 charge/discharge cycles before it's starts to degrade. That's over 13 years if cycled once a day. And you can use them for thousands more cycles at a reduced capacity after that.
If you cycle them to 100% depth of discharge then that shortens the life considerably, but they still out perform lead acid battery's as you would be lucky to get 1 year out one if cycled to 100% depth of discharge.
If you want to build your own lifep04 batteries you could save quite a bit over the price of commercially built batteries, but you need to research carefully how to build one correctly and make sure you are up to the task.

Before buying a cheaper battery check out some Will Prowes utube videos where he takes apart several batteries and shows why you almost always get what you pay for.
Typically with cheaper batteries they are overrated and are made with lower quality components. There are some good lower priced batteries, but you must do some research to find them.
One last thing to note is these batteries are not like wet cell batteries. Lifepo4 batteries have to have some very sophisticated electronics built in in order to keep the battery safe among other things. If the manufacturer uses high quality cells but then cheaps out on the rest of the parts then you could easily end up with a an unsafe or poor performing battery or both.

bigjb62: Most people don't realize that solar & wind power is some of the most expensive ways to generate power and aren't even commercially viable. All the solar and wind farms in the US are tax payer subsidized.

Plus wind turbines generate more than power.

There’s an old saying—
“ I worked really really hard to get out of the cabin -in -the -woods, and into the city. Now, I’ll have to work even harder to get back to the cabin”.
