I've often wondered WHY everyone else in the UK has to learn their chosen working trade (being it via study and often doing practical work too), which then sets them up to do their chosen job, however politicians that are 'dropped' into their Secretary of State positions (Health/Transport/Defence/Enviroment/Trade/Education etc) are usually there with NO actual formal qualifications, to do the job!

doh

While Rishi Sunak did Economics (so in theory that's ideal for being the Chancellor of the Exchequer!), Matt Hancock just studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics, so nothing Health related.

(He's the current Secretary of State.... for Health)
uncertain

Isn't it time that the old outdated Politics study route was updated?
thumbs up

A politics BA currently (usually) involves this:
Who gets what, when and how? This is one of the central questions of politics. On this course you will uncover the negotiation and bargaining processes of politics, who is involved in political discussions, who wins and who loses, what constraints different actors face, and whether certain actors like business and the media have privileged access to power. You will also study the role of gender, class and race and their relationship with political processes and outcomes. The study of political behaviour will enable you to think about the processes of governance and democracy, the causes of war, the impact of the media, and the effects of globalisation. You will explore important ideas in politics: liberal democracy, the idea of freedom, and the capitalist economy, to take just a few. You will also examine how politics works, examining the role and behaviour of officials, governments, political parties, interest and campaign groups, and the public.

All very well and good, BUT it doesn't actually really prepare for any actual State role.
shock

It's about time (I think) that a newer version of Political study was created, specifically for obtaining the important state roles, whereby both coursework and practical study ARE provided for ALL State positions, thus ensuring that people are then qualified for that with relevant knowledge.

applause

Also changes are then done so it's no longer possible to just 'land' anyone into the job, as the applicant chosen by the PM must show competence and knowledge of the work they are possibly tasked to do.
dancing
(That would also make choosing the applicant easier, AND more competitive too)

Many of you reading this go to work each day having learnt your chosen trade and then do a very professional job, or now stay at home (due to Covid19) and still do the same there.
super

Maybe the country wouldn't be in such a mess IF the people actually running it knew what they were actually doing, rather than possibly making it up as they go along!!

confused

Nobody can legally drive any vehicle without proper training, and then has to have a licence to do so.
It's incredible that politicians can 'run' departments knowing little or nothing about what they are doing, and so in effect behave like a untrained soldier heading into conflict, not quite knowing what to do?

playball
Ok, no wonder they just get away with it!
Nobody else seems to be at all concerned about the general lack of politicians qualifications, or experience to do the job?

(Not even 1 comment!)
hmmm

So when the mismanaged UK goes totally down the pan (possibly in early 2021), and the preverbal really hits the fan.....

don't then complain about it!
wink

Too late thumbs down
