singleguy292: Just accept the Ring and return it later, please don't embarrass someone's son in public.
But wouldn't that be giving someone's son the wrong impression?? Wouldn't that put the receiver of the ring in a bad situation publicly? Is this the same lady who accused you of "laughing" with another woman??
Where there was smoke, there is probably fire and she didn't want to get burned.....

I did it and it wasn't a very pleasant experience - accepting the ring and pretending that you are happy just because you are in public and then explaining and refusing later...
If you are not sure about a woman's feelings - in order to avoid all this - better propose a woman in some more private surroundings.

Must have been so awkward for you ...
Also by appearing to "accept the ring in public" then later explaining "in private", it might make the woman look like she is fickle and doesn't know what she wants, then the guy would be able play the victim role and get all the sympathy from everyone ...

Mon Ami do it your way between you, but it might be an idea to include her in your plan
Ask in private first - on a date - and then propose in public at a party of your choice. Neither the man or the woman should be sprung that question in front of a bunch of people. It's a private affair between two adults, not a reality show... In other words, get a room

good point but better to give him the wrong impression than embarrassing him don't you think?
