On line schooling...so PBS had a show on I stopped to watch. WT?? Guy had some chart up. The label below the video feed said Grade 7, something. So must have been for virtual schooling. He explained stuff and then waited for minutes silent so kids could do the figures. I was puzzled and figured out..OK..-5+-3=0. Got a couple others and the rest made no sense.
He came back on and went over the stuff. Seemed kind of like Algebra which I passed and totally forgot over the years of NEVER using it.
My puzzlement is all this to teach kids if you have positive 5+3 you have 8 and if -5+-3 you have -8.confused confused doh
Funny, I see it as you have zero! No wonder kids can't figure out how to balance a checkbook or make change without the register telling them!
5+3 means you have 8. -5+-3 means you are broke and your checking account is overdrawn!
I tried to help neighbor boy once with math homework. He got to a page that had rows of dots. It said find the array. He didn't know what to do and I sure didn't. I said what did the teacher tell you. I don't know. Last I knew an array is the bunch of leds in a light. Found out from parents that he was supposed to draw circles around dots to make groups of 10.
No wonder kids zone out these days and drop out of school. I was taught to memorize numbers. 5+3=8. 8-3=5. Simple and practical. I have, I lose, I have. Never saw any negative apples or oranges. Guess those are the ones in dark matter.dunno

Everything in Education is cattywampus. Many schools have removed handwriting, an absolute cornerstone of learning. (The hand/brain value is a FACT.) Kids are told to use calculators..( not only did my generation have to have correct answers, we had to hand in our paperwork showing HOW we arrived at our answer, with real pencil and scratch paper. Current education will be found to actually be detrimental, not better...what a waste.

Convenience and technology are disabling. The only reason baby boomers, the early boomers, is because their parents crawled out of a smouldering hole in the ground. Raised by modern science with the classic sense of knowing what really hard is.

I hate to burst your bubble but the teacher was correct (-5+-3 you have -8). look at it this way, if you owe Billy 5 bucks and Bobby 3 bucks, you are 8 bucks in debt.

If not world war 3 then any hope for an intelligent species is to send the kids to Catholic school. That is the only way to decelerate society's annihilation of its own intellect. Low tech and the least progressive you can get away with.

well calculating by head is a great thing to know. I have been playing darts in the pub and one day I played against a guy who didn't learn calculating by head, so I had to do it for him.
Today I was in the supermarket, had to pay €36.50 euro's. I had it contant, and the 20 and 10 note didn't cause problems, but the guy had lot's of problems with the 6.50 in coins I payed him. Took him over 2 minutes, while it were all 1 and 2 euro coins and 3 50 ct coins.

That is what is funny. Hand a clerk bill and coin so you get back even, like a single, five or ten. Watch them try to hand you back the coins. Or stare at it totally confused. Experienced clerks rely on the register, just put it in and believe whatever it says to give back. Take away the computer and they are lost.
Tech is fine, if used as a tool to improve or speed up. Not when the machine thinks and the human just believes and obeys.
I would love to see a massive shut down on tech. Watch the cars refuse to go. Store doors refuse to open. House doors locked and people too dumb to figure out what keys do.
I used the old registers. Then one day, the grocery got the new electronic ones. Primitive by todays standards. We were taught how to use them. Got into work one night and gals in panic. Register locked up. I went through all the protocols we had been taught. Again and again and suddenly it worked. The big joke no one thought about was when the power went out. Registers were DOA. Sorry customers. Either wait til ??? or leave empty handed.
I use checks. Hand it to clerk who NOW just inserts and the tech figures it out. I have gotten compliments before from kid clerks admiring my cursive. Now they can't even read it. We were taught in grade school by the Pres of a local bank how to fill out checks. I write only in front of the written area so nothing can be fraudulently added. Or write just. I remember two kids laughing at that. I said that is so the check can't be forged by putting another number in front. It was a mind boggling concept to them.
Like Petra, a city that relied on water aquaducted in..til there was no water to duct. Toodles. Reliance without back up is dangerous. Take nothing for granted. And teach so kids learn, not tune out.doh

You gotta show kids the right way to do things
so that they will know how to it, the right way
even tho not everybody do math the say way
like my daughter was showing her son the easy way
then his dad showing him another way, so now
he confused, so my daughter told him, looked
you just do it my way so you don’t get confused
he good at it now

Conrad73: and even worse if it has Roman Numerals.
It was supposed to say “can’t” read an analog clock, oh yes Roman Numerals would really throw them. It’s very sad. doh

More parental involvement than ever is required these days.

I've spent many months per year making my youngest learn more of what she needs vs. what the systems push. even the basics like face clocks, cursive hand writing.

Math, reading, writing, and the 3 branches of government were among some of the hardest arguments to go through but she did it.

I did get a thank you for some of it once about two years ago when an actual teacher did some random testing in one of her classes to assess the level(s) of certain areas of the students. my student was one of a very few that could do the work and show it for the math and writing alone.

it's harder now, to keep up. when you call a school system out for their garbage curriculum and more, they don't want you involved with much after that.

school choice is where it's at. the public systems, of which the states are in charge of, need less funding. it's becoming more of a waste of our tax dollars.
